This seems to be a bit of a divisive but I will say I've never run into someone online or in person who identified as a furry and didn't have an explicitly sexual element to it. Of that I've only seen a small handful who didn't involve a paraphilia with it (though being sexually attracted to cartoon animals kinda is inherently deviant already), like diapers/piss/scat/vore/inflation etc.

It's because the Furry Fandom has such god awful reputation for dogfuckers, degenerates, and lgbbq shit, that any normie who would be interested, quickly gets repulsed and gives up joining and associating with the fandom. Furries do not want normal people in, because that means they will be pushed into a more normal lifestyle and (minimal) societal standards on how to behave. Normies also shoo autists away and the Furry Fandom is already a result of that happening.

Don't forget that degenerates support each other. An average furry will be far more likely to retweet a drawing with a trans flag/dog dick on it rather that a normal/sfw furry drawing. That's why every day on Twitter you see a millionth drawing with a dog troon saying "tranz raight!!11!" with 10k likes, meanwhile any tame artists are basically unfindable.

And lastly, there are normie artists who draw furries but they draw them quite infrequently or only for commissions. They don't associate with the Furry Fandom at all. These artists draw humans 99% of the time and sometimes a furry character pops in, either a furfag commission or an unused OC of theirs.

I remember how my teacher in college was shocked on how my group just did not gave an absolute fuck about politics (Poland 2014) and whenever she gave our class a political assignment we would just copy paste some news articles and read it in most unenthusiastic and monotone tone to deliver the message.

I swear, if Gamergate didn't happen then I wouldn't even know what left wing/right wing is.

I like to poke through the old newsgroup furry groups, like alt.fan.furry and the lifestyle one. One thing I noticed was various posters getting involved, then a year or two later, completely disappearing. For every Jim Groat there is, there's probably 10-20 other people, maybe better artists, that just get burned out and leave completely, thus leaving just the residual trash to pile up in the fandom.

If furries didn't want to be bullied, why do they go out of their way to be as physically and morally disgusting as possible on a regular basis?

They think it's activism. They genuinely think if they draw their fursona punch "evil Nazis" every "evil Nazi" in the world is going to get owned and explode out of existence. Same with conservatives, transphobes, and anyone that doesn't cater to their libtard standards. They also think if their "trans right" drawing gets attention, that's the same as funding a women's shelter. It's just so autistic. The dog dick excuses are "I only draw human penises on dogs I'm soo superior" which is boosting their self-esteem and avoiding any potential zoo callouts. If they weren't zoophiles, they wouldn't be spending every day on Twitter explaining, slap-fighting, and defending themselves how they aren't zoophiles.

Not surprised, I've seen even furries themselves complain about how toxic the fandom is, and how they want to leave. I think its decentralization has to do with no one agreeing on anything. Anyone decent has either left, milks commission money, or draws silently their characters/fantasy world on the side.

That is an extremely common thing in fandoms in general. Well-adjusted people only have so much time to devote to hobbies and online communities, and after a while they just lose interest or wander off for a while. You can even see it in the farms, with some threads having regulars that pop in and out every few weeks.

The only people who stick to communities long-term are those with not much else to do, those with "political" aspirations in said community, lonely people who just want to belong, or autists who hyperfocus on the subject. Over time, the normies start leaving and the rest just start piling up. That's why "old" fandoms (both chronologically, or fandoms for dead/dormant franchises) always end up going weird and idiosyncratic. Once the community becomes dominated by the dregs, it becomes harder and harder to attract more normies, and people start joining specifically for the hyper-specific thing the community has become known for.

tl; dr: there are no normies in the furry fandom because normies have a habit of wandering off when their passion runs out and they get bored. The weirdos don't.
