I have been to many Orthodox churches in multiple countries. They are often times ornate and/or contain 6 fuckloads of gold accessories. The picture above suggests that particular church probably wasn't that way, but is it common in Ukraine? Successfully repelled the collective aggression of the West for the first time, fighing alone on several fronts and not losing despite the combined efforts of Poland, Sweden and the Ottomans. Didn't get access to the Baltics but laid down the foundations of geopolitical survival that have lasted to this day.

It gets as cold as the surface of Mars in many places, it's basically always snowed-in and when it's not, it's muddy as hell. Couple this with almost no pre-existing infrastructure whatsoever, and you've got yourself an uphill battle right off the bat.

The amount of money and manpower you'd spend trying to take a permanently inhospitable Taiga and make it useful would be obscene. Even if China's willing to fling the manpower into it, China's economy isn't doing so hot at the moment and I doubt they'd want to take the massive gamble that is basically terraforming the Whole Lotta Nothin' that is the Russian Far East.
