I suspect the firm, if forced to give an answer, would say they declined to hire him based on his past history of filing suits in bad faith. Fear that he might misuse the formidable resources of a law firm for his personal vendettas would be a reasonable defense as to why they didn't hire him. I seriously doubt they said they didn't hire him because he's not LDS. Some businesses are allowed to discriminate on the basis of religion IF advancing the cause of a particular faith is the mission of the business. A Christian adoption agency can require all its employees to be adherents to evangelical Christianity or whatever. Since it sounds like it's just a standard for-profit law firm, I bet they're very careful to not give the impression they're biases towards a particular faith.
