What are the most pretentious games ever made?

It really shows you the abysmal low self-esteem of game developers when they let the commentary of a dying boomer only famous because of a normie tv show about movies define their entire lives and careers moving forward.
Sorry for being out of the loop, but which boomer are you referring to? IIRC the anti-GTA lawyer guy was a 2000s phenomenon so who was it?

To my knowledge, no one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great dramatists, poets, filmmakers, novelists and composers. That a game can aspire to artistic importance as a visual experience, I accept. But for most gamers, video games represent a loss of those precious hours we have available to make ourselves more cultured, civilized and empathetic.

Unlike its predecessor System Shock, biocock's recordings are generally invasive in gameplay, too lengthly and the placement really didnt make sense oftentimes, It really raises the question if the Rapture citizens were either extremely autistic or mentally ill to end up mainly using recordings to communicate on a daily basis.

That is some statement to say that in B1 the audiobooks were invasive, when they at last expanded the lore in interesting ways while say Infinite had no sensible lore at all.
SS implementation of audiologs to convey storytelling was years light more coherent and succint than this crap. What happened Ken Levine?.
Also the whole fuss about "choices & consequences" by merely deciding either harvest or save the Little Sisters, which basically translated into a different ending.
Still better than an ending where you're always the villain no matter what you chose, so better kill yourself.

The awful Saint's Row reboot made me realize how much I miss 2000s gangster rap culture in the entertainment media. There was a whole gangsta rap video game sub genre that lasted until Saint's row the third came out. Saint's row and Grand theft auto San Andreas were offensive and proud of it. Pimps and Hoes were celebrated and gamer culture was better for it. Gangsta rap was the last of the edgy 90s that survived into the late 2000s.

For some reason I can’t stand real life gangsta rap culture but I love it in vidya form. Among other things it’s like tribal warfare with guns.

It fundamentally wrong because Ayn Rand never advocates the use of physical violence to defend ideas. But It's loosely based at best, so whatever.

But that is the point that Bioshock and human fucking history makes. You literally cannot be a pure materialist without resortig to brute violence. Humanity has infinite needs, they never stop, that is literally Point 1 of economic. Andrew Ryan's bullshit utopia to defeat overbearing authority by forcing the best people on the planet become completely reliable on his creation, being locked up in that shit, always had only one end.

Personally the most pretentious game I ever played was Beyond: Two Souls. Game tried to do the whole "Tarantino" styled plot by playing all the chapters out of order making you try to guess which order they go in, not to mention the only thing Ellen Page did in this game is she fucking whines and cries about fucking everything. Not only that but the game tries to make you believe that a 5ft 90lb girl like Ellen could somehow flip over grown ass men that are at least a foot taller than her and outweigh her by 100lbs, which looked fucking ridicules as it sounds.

The fact that I wasted $60 on that POS still makes me mad considering that I was a broke ass college student at the time working a shitty part time job. I remember the dipshit lady at Gamestop even told me that "this game is really fun and I can't wait to start playing it again when I get home". Fuck that game.
 
David Cage gets shit on a lot. But imo Hideo Kojima is a bigger pretentious hack than cage is, not helped by the fact that a legion of fanboys defend every garbage decision Kojima makes. MGS is possibly responsible for all Cutscene heavy movie games that come out nowadays.
As much as I do enjoy Kojima's games (for what it's worth), I do hate his hamfisted and long-winded attempts at storytelling. Also would agree on him being a reason, not the sole cause, but a pretty big reason for all the movie games (because he already did it, others can too). And I point at Metal Gear Solid 1 - 4 for this; mainly if you want to get top marks, you need to skip damn near every cutscene, conversation, etc because you're being graded via time and the clock doesn't stop in cutscenes/codecs/etc. Sure this can be attributed to the disconnect between storytelling and gameplay; but I refuse to accept that, you want an intriguing (war is bad) story, but if I get the full story experience, you're gonna tell me I'm shit at games at the end? Nah, fuck you.
 
Double checked to make sure it wasn't already posted here - Anonymous Agony. RPG Maker game about a self-insert edgelord OC who kills pedophiles, feeds corpses to dogs, roasts his family, does small talk with prostitutes and hates his therapist. I think that says enough about the game itself. On top of that, the director of the project, Jacob Caro, was notoriously bad to work with and had a ton of really dumb ideas like adding fake loading screens.


There was a video made by an ex-coworker which sheds more light on the author. He links to a google document in the description detailing even more about him, including his criminal record of burglary and child abuse. There is even a thread about the game on KF from 2019 that details this stuff.

 
Gone Home was the beginning of the end of me watching Giant Bomb content. I remember Brad reviewing it saying it was "an important game" or something dumb. I booted it up, was excited for some sort of spooky haunted house simulator, then got 2 hours of milquetoast LGBT garbage.
Ironically it was an incredibly important game. It showed me and others how unreliable gaming media was and while their shilling generated millions in sales, it destroyed hundreds of millions in institutional value and advertising revenue. I don’t check review aggregators or sites anymore, only steam scores, curated lists, or word of mouth. I’m very thankful for the game, otherwise the slow burn over the last decade would have been unbearable.
 
Forgot to mention Middens and Gingiva, they are surreal rpg maker games, but instead of being weird for the sake of it (like good games such as Yume Nikki and Hylics) they are weid to pass some sort of "message" I heard there was one about how marriage """ruins a woman's life""" yada,yada.
