That particular instance opened my eyes to the fact that US foreign policy doesn't have to just be an endless cycle of sending billions to some country I don't give a fuck about and sending troops to some desert. We're the only superpower in the world right now, and we can basically do whatever the fuck we want. That particular instance of uniting the Koreas didn't work but fuck it, there's no harm in trying.

In theory we could be trying that again right now. We could be having talks with Russia or China or any country that presents a problem and negotiate using our leverage as the only country that matters while that's still true. It's the fact that every other administration doesn't even try to put on the appearance of doing that which shows how they really feel about using their position of power for good.

One of the reasons that Trump is so dangerous to tptb is that he actually practiced diplomacy instead of just threatening to spend billions of dollars and waste tens of thousands of lives to accomplish nothing.

Removed from what I think about him as a person, his personality etc, he's a pragmatic businessman who understands if the common man is happy and profitable with something to look forward to, in the long run he's even happier because he's more profitable in turn. That attracts more business, more trade, more profit to go around. Modern countries don't really want war unless it's the only thing left to profit from, and Trump offered a better, more peaceful alternative. We can debate about capitalism, corporatism or whatever but his business isn't from wars and the complex suffering produced by them. We're very clearly seeing how only the elites and connected truly profit during wartime with open disregard for the common man. And unlike Soros, his actions say he's content to let others succeed alongside him rather than keeping it all to himself, especially if you stroke his ego.
It's the difference between a farmer who thinks he'll make a profit by starving and neglecting his cows before beating them for not making enough milk, vs the one who may not really care for cows but understands investing in the best care and feed will make the cows happy and therefore the end products superior. He's not perfect and has old people ideas, but it's ignorant to dismiss what he offered because of that. His opinion on net neutrality for instance is frustrating but it didn't have the weight of finality. You got the impression he could be convinced, unlike the progs and ptb who will hammer in a thousand nails for a half inch of power.
