Walmart closing 4 Chicago stores, blaming millions in annual losses

Walmart says Chicago stores' annual losses nearly doubled in last 5 years

By Greg Norman | FOXBusiness

Walmart has announced Tuesday that it is closing four of its Chicago stores because they are part of a group of locations that "lose tens of millions of dollars a year."

The retail giant says the Chatham Supercenter, the Walmart Health center, and the Walmart Academy at 8431 S. Stewart Ave., the Kenwood Neighborhood Market at 4720 S. Cottage Grove Ave., the Lakeview Neighborhood Market at 2844 N. Broadway St. and the Little Village Neighborhood Market at 2551 W. Cermak Road will shutter this upcoming Sunday.

"The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago -- these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years," Walmart said in a statement.

"The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community," it added.

Walmart said that "over the years, we have tried many different strategies to improve the business performance of these locations, including building smaller stores, localizing product assortment and offering services beyond traditional retail.

"We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the city, including $70 million in the last couple years to upgrade our stores and build two new Walmart Health facilities and a Walmart Academy training center," the company also said.

"It was hoped that these investments would help improve our stores’ performance," Walmart said in press release, but "Unfortunately, these efforts have not materially improved the fundamental business challenges our stores are facing."

Walmart announced Tuesday, April 11, 2023, it is closing four Chicago stores that lose millions each year.

Those employed by the stores that are soon set to close are now eligible to transfer to work at other Walmart locations.

"Hiring managers from surrounding facilities will be in each of these stores this week to help associates begin finding their next opportunity," according to Walmart.

The company said it hopes to repurpose the buildings it’s leaving behind so they remain "important parts of their communities."

Affected staff will be paid until Aug. 11, 2023, unless they transfer out to another store. After that date, Walmart said those eligible will receive severance benefits. The number of positions being impacted was not immediately clear.

FOX Business has reached out to Walmart and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce for further comment.

If your local Wal-Mart has a mural out front that says "Peace. Community. Safety. Hope.", odds are good you have none of those things.

I wonder if Walmart groveled before Fentanyl Floyd's corpse in 2020
of course they did. https://archive.is/mhQMT

I'm even more glad they're shuttering after reading that line. You get what you fucking deserve!

It's seriously impressive how one of the most ruthlessly efficient retailers in America can't afford to keep the lights on and the shelves stocked due to massive and continual petty theft. This isn't someone's hobby business or boutique bakery, it's Wal-Mart. They already cut costs to the bone wherever they can. And none if it was enough to survive in these 'communities.'

I don't understand how things are still being stolen if everything, including Spam, is locked up.

I think they learned to attack the frames so they can yank the doors out or at least enough to get their hands in. Chinesium sheet metal isnt strong enough to withstand niggers.

A total lack of enforcement makes any security ineffective. At some point, an employee has to remove a product from the security and give it to a customer - at which point they can just walk out with it anyway. And that's assuming they don't just rip the package open, or kick out the sliding glass door or whatever protections were put on it while hopped up with crackhead strength. Between the security point and the checkout, you rely on staff or security stopping people who try to just walk out anyway, and now that doing so is basically illegal and likely to get you charged with a hate crime, nobody doing that.

Only way to make commerce work in these regions is to return to the old style of stores where everything was behind a counter, and you ask an employee to get it for you, who retains the item until you've paid. Armor up the counter, and off you go. But of course, that style of store is straight up illegal in many areas, and is completely incompatible with the warehouse store approach - imagine trying to find a worker at walmart wages who can actually decypher some rambling trashes descriptions of a product and then find it in the giant store for them.

You can scream racism all you want, but at the end of the day, if you're community is garbage, its not going to be developed. Giving people a pass on their community is basically causing this. You don't want cops enforcing shit in your communities? Ok. But at the same time you don't want your communities criticized for anything. I mean, which is it?

They want their cake and eat it too. Do whatever they want with no consequences. Well, they got what they PROTESTED for.

Cities like this should not exist as they endanger the American public.

Not far enough.

Got to have, and enforce, a dress code. No saggin' ass panties like Fleece Johnson likes. No snapbacks. No Jordans. No basketball attire. No do-rags.
Enforce broken window laws. Like nuisance sound laws. Like, NIGGER, do you honestly think blasting that jungle crap is gonna make me go "Oh, WAOWWWWW--what kind oF mUsIc iS tHaT?? HoW cAn I bE cOol lIkE yOu?"

Basically make being a NIGGER or NIGRESS, and general NIGGERdom--illegal with extreme prejudice. Of course...that means we have to identify, round up, punish, and get rid of white race traitors who love making sure NIGGERS can act like NIGGERS and engage freely in NIGGERdom at everyone's expense.

Around blacks, never relax.
