From what I know, Google does an intermediate step where it first translates to some kind of universal machine language first and then translates to the target language (this in order to be able to translate any language to any other language by having the shared universal machine language) whereas DeepL apparently just translates straight to the target language. Might be wrong, but this is what I've heard.
