“Anti-woke” ‘Super Mario Bros Movie’ Actually Includes a Drag Scene

The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023) movie has made animation history as the biggest video game movie adaptation in box office history. The film has raked in over $377 million and has earned the biggest opening of an animated film.

The film was originally met with disappointment and low expectations from fans due to the casting of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario and the realization that the beloved video game character would not have his iconic Italian accent. However, the film has defied expectations, even while being poorly reviewed by critics, and has an audience score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Super Mario Bros Movie is also being praised by a certain group of people, but for a completely different reason, claiming the film is as successful as it is because it’s “anti-woke.”

The Walt Disney Company has faced backlash recently over various projects with both their filming projects and their Park announcements, as well as their still-ongoing battle with Florida governor Ron DeSantis that started when Disney refused to support his proposed “Don’t Say Gay Bill” last year. Disney has been slammed for being too woke for these reasons, as well as their increased inclusion of queer characters and characters of color. The Super Mario Bros Movieis produced by Illumination, a branch of Univeral Studios, and is being praised for being “anti-woke”…although there aren’t any actual reasons given as to why the film is considered as such.

However, ironically, the film actually does include a scene that would be considered controversial and “woke,” especially given today’s climate with the queer community and various laws, gender affirming care being denied to transgender people, and drag shows being banned across the country. In one scene in the film, Kamek, who is Bowser’s right-hand man, is seen wearing drag. He’s essentially in a Princess Peach costume, with a full dress, wig, and make up. While the shot is brief, and is most likely a reference to one of the video game variations, it would still be considered drag within the confines of the recent proposed laws across the country, and definitely wouldn’t be considered “anti-woke.”

Films have been showing characters in drag for decades, including children’s films like Lilo and Stitch (2002). Most of the time, the intended audience for the film is too young to grasp the overall context or implications of those scenes, and just find it to be a funny moment in a cool movie. It’s not necessarily “woke” to include scenes like this, but it certainly isn’t “anti-woke” either.

Yeah in the same way Aunt Luigeena and Mama Mario were trans / crossdresssing. In the fact they weren't at all and it was played as a drag gag.
E: This shits been around since before even the 70s and its nothing new. Its played for laughs IDK how these brainlets can say these things with any sincerity. They probably can't honestly.
E2: I am pretty sure I remember skits with the Marx brothers dressed up as women in disguise and you see Groucho going by with his big mustache and one of the men looking for them making comments about how the women look around here and groucho getting mildly upset that he doesn't make an attractive broad in a retort almost giving himself away.

Drag is sexual and making fun of women, crossdressing is played up as a joke/for laughs. Hence what this is, a joke to laugh at.

Crossdressing =/= drag and I'm tired of people using the two interchangeably these days.
Hey, just saying, I never saw people getting outraged over Bugs Bunny crossdressing in old Looney Tunes shorts.

I literally have not heard anyone refer to this movie as anti-woke. I heard it was a good movie, but that was mostly from my lefty friends.
genuinely reminds me of the situation with the angry birds movie years ago when because it had parallels to the migrant crisis happening in europe with it's plot people were calling it all kinds of shit instead of going "heheh that's kinda funny!"
Why the fuck are both of these cases of people claiming a movie is somehow secretly an own on their political opponents who are bad/dumb people for liking the movie video game adaptation movies. Seriously shit's conspiracy tier shit. Thy pulled this with the sonic movie too when they changed the design to be less uncanney valley too IIRC. it's ALWAYS the fucking cgi vidya characters they pull this shit with.

Woooow people are reading way too into "haha Bowser's minions are dumb".
Not the 8 year olds this film is meant for. They probably get that its funny that Kamek went the extra mile and unnecessarily put on a wig and a dress to look like Peach for Bowsers proposal. Kids get that its funny because Kamek is an idiot. Grown ass adults think the scene is some queer enabling shit meant to own the Chuds in Florida who support Ron DeSantis because Twitter politics have rotted their brains or something.

In the original Nintendo Power Mario comic, Princess Peach and Luigi swapped clothing so Luigi could infiltrate Bowser's castle dressed as Peach. I suppose this means they both wanted to change gender, eh?

The Troons have declared that no one is allowed to cross-dress for nonsexual reasons, even though you could argue that people have been doing so for centuries. Hell. My family album has a picture of my grandma in the 1930s wearing overalls while harvesting potatoes. Guess that meant she wanted to be a pooner.

Crossdressing jokes weren't invented last century. They're a staple of comedy dating back to the Ancient Greeks. Almost all comedies during the Renaissance had a crossdresser as a gag. Of course it wasn't sexual, they were just making fun at look how unnatural this would fucking be.

Drag queens are gross and s product of hedonist faggot culture. They have no place in public and even less so around children.

They know it, but they've got to "own" you and embarrass you into submission
I don't think they do know it, the left doesn't get jokes and can't meme. Trannies are literally seeing themselves as a wizard Koopa in a Peach dress. I watched that and laughed at the absurdity of fucking Bowser pulling a Dark Helmet with the dolls but somehow cranked up harder

So how did American parenting go to shit so fast in the past decade?
Parents giving their kids ipads and shit instead of engaging with them which gave groomers a direct conduit to impressionable kids with zero parental supervision. Being able to bypass parents has always been the key to fuckin up kids and kids with internet access and unengaged parents provide a direct conduit for anyone to get at em.

I've never heard anyone call this 'anti-woke'. If anything, I've heard people call it 'woke' because Princess Peach was too much of a 'girl boss'. A strong female character isn't automatically a 'woke girl boss'.
I loved the movie and yeah, there was a moment or two where Peach reeked of a Mary Sue, but it didn't ruin the movie and she couldn't have beat Bowser without Mario so I don't give a fuck. Peach is canonically capable of being a hero. So I can give it a pass.

It feels more like the author of this article was huffing copium and desperately trying to find one tiny straw that they could twist into 'wokeness' so they can claim that 'woke' movies sell.

Anyone who grew up in the early 00's or earlier can easily recognize a crossdressing scene played for laughs. Because that's the reality of it.
Crossdressing is hilarious, not 'beautiful' and 'brave'. People will laugh at how ridiculous it is.

Not the first time Mario has had crossdressing played up for comedy either.
As Pokemon Conquistador mentioned, the old 90's comic that ran in Nintendo Power magazine had a scene where Peach and Luigi swapped clothing. Peach's scene wasn't comedic, but Luigi's most certainly was.
Needless to say, Mario was freaked out by it.

I would rather just play a Mario game than watch a Mario movie. This doesn't look like a pro trannie scene. It looks like drag is being used in the same way Bigs Bunny would dress up as a woman to make Elmer Fudd look like a fool. I guess that's pro trans and woke as well. Bugs Bunny dressing up as a woman was stunning and brave. Elmer Fudd was a bigot. I doubt there is anything more to it than that because this movie is obviously aimed at kids and it's Nintendo. It took them a long time to let M rated games on their consoles. Nintendo is very protective of their brands. It's also a Japanese brand so the Japs are pretty good at not being woke. But then again, they aren't Christians and don't have a real issue with fags and trannies I imagine. They just want round eye parents to take their little round eye kids out to watch their movie.

But it's nice seeing the woke media is still willing to expose its retardation to the world.
Drag jokes are nothing new...
the best TV show ever has lots and lots of drag...
There was a reason for it though. He was trying get kicked out of the army for mental health issues. Back then people still knew that a guy pretending be a woman was mentally ill.
In no way do people have a problem with drag so much as involving children watching drag queens twerking and grinding on them.
If children weren't involved people really wouldn't care that much. All you would have is the minority of moral fags screeching about it. Most people would just laugh at them and move on. I mean trannies are fucking weird. But if they aren't bothering kids people wouldn't care. They didn't before and no one really cared. People didn't like them. But they left them alone. It was like a reluctant acceptance. As long as you don't bother us, we won't bother you. Then they crossed that line and started bothering people. Even worse they started messing with people's kids.

hey, dont spoil that show to others...

Things like this confirm to me at least that these people are truly autistic. You decide to wear pants one day and you're suddenly "gender fluid" because women can't wear pants, apparently. A man thinks his hands looks bad and gets basic manicure and he's been also "gender queer" because it's not "normal" for men to do so.

Crossdressing jokes weren't invented last century. They're a staple of comedy dating back to the Ancient Greeks. Almost all comedies during the Renaissance had a crossdresser as a gag. Of course it wasn't sexual, they were just making fun at look how unnatural this would fucking be.

Not only comedies: men performed as women too because women couldn't be participate. You have now also companies that are only female and they perform male roles.

FTR, when one of the kids was in preschool, moms performed for Father's Day and our class did YMCA. I had to dress like one of those and dance like a man. It was fun, but only a lunatic would say that Mrs. Tatty was "gender fluid". That is now the norm. Someone would use this to say "see? You're trans too!"

Based on context it can be safely assumed "anti-woke" is how retards, faggots and troons pronounce "normal"
No, they are right saying this movie is anti-woke because it was actually supervised to NOT have any modern day woke shenanigans, but rather things the audience would like.

Movies with "social messages" are fine if that's what you go for. Most -if not all- Hollywood movies try to push for a more liberal/leftist message and some of them aren't necessarily bad. Even if you don't buy the whole message of the movie, at least you can accept that, for example, "discriminate people is bad".

Woke movies are a different matter. Woke movies ARE the message too. The movie isn't just used to tell a story, the whole movie is also used to fight some cause, like The Little Mermaid, whose cast is just to own the racist and show them that "white supremacy" has no space in filmmaking. The story isn't as relevant as the highlight of having a black mermaid for black girls to feel represented.
