Crossing state lines can make it a federal matter. They think they have better chances of convicting in federal court because the DOJ are their Stasi arm.
They don't want you being tried by a jury of peers from your community, because they might have "local biases", i.e. they don't ballwash the DNC.

Because of the Kyle Rittenhouse debacle, mostly. From day one, leftist media was (falsely) claiming he had CROSSED STATE LINES with the Semi-Fully Automatic Assault Rifle-15 he used to UNPROVOKEDLY AND INHUMANELY MURDER INNOCENT AND PEACEFUL PROTESTERS who crossed his warpath on the way to establish the Drumpf Reich.
Attempts at humorous histrionics aside, this was all they could hang on to condemn Rittenhouse once the footage of the event was out, and people could see that he shot his attackers in obvious self defense. From then on, "crossing state lines" was repeated anytime they could, because it was their last hope of getting a dangerous heretic thrown to the flames. Then, it was discovered that the rifle belongs to a friend/coworker who lived in Kenosha, and had not left the city, much less the state, which crumbled the remains of their sand castle. Butthurt, CNN & Co. continued to parrot the "crossed state lines with an illegal weapon" and "wholesale slaughter of peaceful protesters" lines up until the verdict was announced.
