Youtube Vanced is kill - WHY FUCKING WHY IM GOING TO FUCKING THROW A FIT

Call me retarded but I'm not seeing where to download the apk on github.

From what I read you should be patching a (trusted) YouTube APK with Revanced Manager and install it that way, no root needed. It says it isn't actively maintained but so far it's the method I switched over to, and still works.

So this is even more complicated than OG Vanced. This bullshit always has to be a hassle.

How is Newpipe in comparison?
And it appears as if this method is currently maintained, and I'm in the same pickle, idk if there is a "trusted" apk I could just switch over to.

I'm all over the fucking place right now, but yeah, NewPipe is wonderful, and doesn't have hard requirements for any sort of Google account information.

For the desktop, use piped.video. Has builtin SponsorBlock, just like NewPipe with Sponsorblock.

The reason you have to patch the apps is so that the ReVanced devs remove another potential liability from their project, which is distributing modded Google APKs, but if you only distribute your own code and not the original APKs then you're less likely to be assraped by Google, and also it allows you to patch other apps, essentially becoming something like Lucky Patcher.

Hey there folks, so youtube has implemented some kind of account-specific block on playing videos using MicroG, this has the effect of rendering existing youtube vanced installs worthless.
HOWEVER
Don't uninstall yet. This issue is also affecting youtube revanced, and the issue lays with microG. MicroG is still in active development, so there will probably be a fix at some point.
For now, here's what you'll want to do if you're a 70 IQ Pinhead like me and don't want to fuck around with technology:
  1. Go to the app store and install Kiwi Browser (no relation to this site AFAIK)
  2. Kiwi browser supports all Chrome addons!
  3. Go to the Chrome web store in Kiwi browser, and install your favorite adblocker, along with sponsorblock, return youtube dislike, a picture-in-picture addon, and any other youtube-related addons you desire (just search "youtube" in the webstore")
  4. Make sure that you disable battery optimization for kiwi browser so your phone doesn't decide to close kiwi browser in the background.
  5. download THIS EXTENSION and install it via zip in kiwi browser, it enables background play of youtube videos.
Congrats! You've now got a method of using youtube in your phone that is extremely ghetto, but still retains noadz and background play and some other helpful features, and avoids having to give your hard-earned goodboypoints to the servants of the antichrist!

This is exactly what I've been doing. Having sponsorblock on mobile is really nice and is the main reason I did it.

I have "based" conspiracy-theorist, Google-hating family members who pay for YouTube Red so they don't have to deal with ads. Fucking morons.

Even if the Kiwi method's too strenuous, the Brave browser blocks YT ads just fine and allows for background playback. Maybe it's not as slick as the app or whatever (which I forcefully removed from my phone) but it's totally worth it.

Current issue is confirmed to be A/B Testing done by google that breaks microg. Should hopefully be a fix in the future, but it's probably still a ways off.
You can get around it by switching to a new youtube account, but fuck that.

It's a five minute process that you only have to do once. They could hardly have made it more turnkey.
Yeah, I'm a 70 IQ pinhead and i got it in one try. You just download the microg if you dont have it, download a specific release of the youtube APK off APKmirror and dont install it, install the manager, pick the apk file, select what options you want and it does the damn thing

No need buddy. Get revanced manager:
You will need a specific version APK of youtube. You can get this off apk mirror.

Don't install the apk, just hang onto it.
You're gonna open the revanced manager app, and then go to patcher and "select an application", then navigate to the apk you just downloaded.
You're gonna be presented then with a list of patches. The one you're gonna need to bypass this fix, in addition to microg support patch, is "client spoof", and also select any other patches you would like, such as hiding ads etc etc.
You will then proceed and follow the steps the manager gives you, and you will have a nice shiny revanced app on your phone which works.

Hmu if you run into problems and fuck Neal Mohan

Also, I should add that this problem isn't new and it doesn't necessarily kill vanced. It's close to a year old, it just hasn't gotten pushed to everyone.
The long and short of it is that youtube has been a/b testing something that breaks microg support. A/b testing is where they test it on a certain subset of users only. They've been shifting what regions of the globe and what accounts they test this on, and sometimes they'll switch it off for a few days so your app will work again, then they'll switch it back on. Probably trying to see how much they can yank you around before your account buys youtube premium.
Microg is the alt Google services project that apps like vanced or revanced run on. Microg could fix this but the developer is in school and has limited time to work on microg. It'll get fixed sometime, whenever his exams end.
So, when that fix happens, vanced could continue to work indefinitely as the broken jank mess it is.

I figured out how to use ReVanced CLI so that you can patch APK's on your computer. I'll write up a guide on how to patch Google's YouTube app to make it ReVanced and run rootless. If you know how to root your phone you probably are already capable of following the instructions for the rooted variant anyway.

You will need:
The patching utility from GitHub
This specific version of JDK, preferably as a .zip (according to the instructions on the revanced-cli repo you need a x86/x86_64 host)
The newest bundle of patches (you will also need to use the readme during the process)
The newest integrations
You also cannot be a nigger because you will have to use a command line.

After you've got all this, it will be the easiest to unzip the JDK somewhere, and then throw your patching utility, patches, integrations and the APK you want to patch into the bin folder.

As for which APK you should get, look at the patches repo. It has APK package names listed, as well as the patches supported by them and the newest version that they're meant for. As of writing this comment the newest supported version of YouTube is 18.05.40. Go to apkmirror.com, find the newest version, and download the newest APK (not bundle).

Important thing to note: you will have to rename the .apk file to the same name present on the patches readme, or else the patcher won't know which patches it needs to apply and instead it will apply all the possible patches for all the possible apps.

At this point, in the bin folder of your unzipped JDK, you should have:
revanced-cli.apk
revanced-patches.jar
revanced-integrations.apk
com.google.android.youtube.apk

So now you start the command line in this location, and enter the following command:
java -jar revanced-cli.jar -a com.google.android.youtube.apk -c -o revanced.apk -b revanced-patches.jar -m revanced-integrations.apk
It will run the Java exectuable, load the ReVanced patcher, and it will parse the name of the APK you want to patch, clean the cache, parse the output name of the patched APK, parse the file containing patches, and it will also merge the ReVanced Integrations APK which is required for a bunch of patches.

After hitting Enter, you should see a whole bunch of INFO: lines popping up. First about reading dex files, decoding AndroidManifest.xml, skipping some patches that are excluded by default, merging integrations APK, and then a bunch of "succeeded" messages regarding specific patches.

By the end of the process you should see zero errors and in the same folder as the unpatched APK, you should see the revanced.apk file, that's your ReVanced app. Copy that over to your phone, install it and you're done.

Now, sure, this process is way more convoluted than just using the ReVanced Manager app, but keep in mind that the app runs on your phone's CPU which is multiple times slower than your desktop, or even laptop CPU, so via the CLI utility you will patch it faster.

EDIT: Took me way too long but I made a simplified script for batch patching. Note that it's just the script, and you will need to follow the instructions to actually set up all the software needed for patching. After that it should be very simple to use.

I really don't mind the ads I get on my phone.

But on TV, where there's no Vanced or Adblock, I get over and over long unskippable SPORTS BETTING ads despite me clicking the "never show this ad again, irrelevant, repetitive" link hundreds of times. At least I skip it by choosing that.

SmartYouTube is what you need for TV. I have it on my Android TV box with no Google services and it works great. You can even log in into your YT account but it still works without it.

Am I autistic enough to figure this shit out just to be able to listen to ClownfishTV minimized? Time will tell.

FWIW, Brave seems to go from not being able to run YouTube minimized on my cheap ass Android phone to being able to do so, seemingly at random. Currently it works, lowering my incentive to go down this path.

I did the kiwi browser one, and it's the bees knees.

I think you should be good. Download the script I've embedded in the post, it has text instructions with links saying what you need to download, how you should name it and where should you put it before running the script, it should be easier that way.
