One thing that puzzled me is why Shane stopped posting on Neowin. All of his posts I've been able to find from him on there are a decade or more old. What the fuck happened? It seems to me what is basically a Microsoft fan forum would be the PERFECT place for Shane to post, since he could pull out the "I work for Microsoft" card on a daily basis and get people falling over themselves to praise him and beg him for special insights.

It turns out Shane was BANNED FROM NEOWIN by the editor of the site (this goes all the way to the top!) and this pissed Shane off so much that he was still seething about it years later, all the way in 2020.

Now you may wonder why a Microsoft superstar employee like Shane was banned from a Microsoft discussion forum.

It turns out Neowin wasn't the only Microsoft fan forum that Shane was banned from.

After investigating the replies to the Tweets I posted above more closely, I noticed that an employee named Daniel at a site called Windows Central had sent a message saying that Shane "is up there on my list of people with emotional/anger issues".

Daniel had on standby an email Shane sent in 2014 - yes, he remembered the email Shane sent 5-6 years earlier because it was so crazy - after he gave Shane some sort of ban on posting on what was then called WPCentral. It sounds like a thread or forum ban instead of a full sitewide ban, but I'm not sure.

Here's the email:


"I'm telling you at this point I will flat out tell my team that posting at WPCentral is highly inadvisable."

Shane responded in a Tweet below, saying "It's cute when Daniel pretends I didn't affect the amount of info they got from internal sources until I left in 2016. I did, & it hurt the bottom line of the site."

Shane adds that Daniel used SOCK ACCOUNTS to pretend that people supported banning people like Shane who disagreed with Daniel!

Unfortunately, it looks like Daniel won, and Shane's polite exhortation to "get your staff in line" failed: Daniel's current job title at Windows Central is "editor-in-chief".

I like the assumption that Warren was just guessing about whether or not Shane was a Microsoft employee.

Warren is an actual tech journalist on the Microsoft beat for over two decades at this point. That means that even a decade ago he had years to develop sources at Microsoft that were generally accepted by all relevant parties, including Microsoft, to be Microsoft employees. It also presumably means he had formal contacts with Microsoft employees as well. For instance, they might invite him to Microsoft events, and when he arrives, he's greeted as if he's expected, and not with questions like "Who invited you?" and responses like "I've never heard of that person in my life."

Irrespective of whether Shane was a contractor or a bona fide Microsoft employee for some length of time, Shane has not provided sufficient details about what role(s) he had to justify the idea that it provided sufficiently voluminous inside information such that he is able to draw broad-reaching conclusions about Microsoft's business strategy across multiple divisions.

I would trust him about the maximum distance you can kick a chicken in Fable II.

If you haven't already, click through the Tweets to see how this particular interaction in 2020 started. Some Tweets have been deleted, but it looks like he was still sufficiently mad at Neowin even in 2020 that he was going through their employees' Tweets and taking issue with their takes on Doctor Who.

I agree that Warren had no need to ask because he's dealt with enough Microsoft employees to know that how Shane acts is not consistent with an actual Microsoft employee. In particular, as @ten dollars off noted, any employee with proprietary information to the extent that Shane leads people to believe he had is going to have an NDA. And if it's found you have violated that NDA, you will be fired and you might get sued. And if you're posting under your real name on one of the most prominent sites for Microsoft discussion of the day, it's not going to escape attention. It's just not.

Meanwhile here's Shane replying to a guy who told him "the "I worked for Microsoft and know what I'm talking about, you're all wrong" attitude that you exude is really starting to get old" (this post is from 2012, BTW).

Shane implies that he has NDA(s), but that "some of the [Neowin] staff know precisely where I've worked"!

My guess after reading that post? Shane got tired of merely saying "I'm a Microsoftie, so I'm right and you're wrong!" to the other plebs on the forum, and went to forum staff presenting himself as an insider, and at some point Warren got tired of this and nuked his account from orbit. It could also be that it was the other way around - they came to him and ordered him to provide receipts, and eventually Warren intervened and found his evidence lacking.

This is just my speculation though, so Shane is welcome to correct the record as to why Warren came to the conclusion he was '"impersonating" Microsoft staff'.

However, this could all be totally wrong since he also could have been banned merely because he was pissing people off. The specific thread that screenshot above came from needed a mod to come in and sweep it up after four pages because people couldn't stop complaining about a certain jackass shitting up the thread.

Microsoft does have a Windows Insider Program Agreement with some changes in 2020 (they would go through their NDA forms to also change a few things too just last year. This felt like it was more due to what's going on in the Activision Blizzard lawsuit). Though depending on your role in the company you're still subject to NDA's. However, insider builds are public so there's no reason to have an NDA. If you sign an NDA don't be stupid and break it. Not only will a tech company sue you into the ground and force you into bankruptcy, but you can face time in prison. When signing theirs you also wave any chance of having the lawsuit in another State/ Country, it's on their turf, no exceptions. You could sign in one of their other offices anywhere in the world, it wont matter.
