PORTLAND, Ore. — A pastry chef is recovering after being attacked by a dog on Monday.

Cheryl Wakerhauser owns Pix Patisserie. She says she was out on a run along Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard when she was attacked and mauled by a dog.

She reports the dog was off leash in a parking lot of a vacant building that’s surrounded by a chain-link fence.
The dog grabbed her leg and threw her to the ground, and attacked her legs and arm.

Wakerhauser says she has more than 35 puncture wounds.

“The arm, the leg, the other leg, I was just trying to put my foot in front of him and wave at cars that were driving by,” she said. “And I start looking around, and I started saying, like, I’m on the ground. I started screaming for help like I was having a nightmare, like, ‘Help me, somebody help me,’ and in a nightmare you’re screaming but nobody can hear you. I felt like that.”

Wakerhauser finally caught the eye of one driver who turned around and honked her horn to try to scare the dog off.

At the same time, she says a man with a leash walked up, said it wasn’t his dog, and then led the dog away.

Another witness followed the man and dog and led police to them.

Wakerhauser says the dog was taken away by animal control. The dog is a pitbull named "Bubbie," as confirmed by police.

Wakerhouser states public safety in Portland needs to be a top priority and that she’s tired of getting lip service from city government instead of real change.

She also says the city has a job to do to fix problems instead of putting a band-aid on it.

On Thursday Portland Police told KATU that the dog's handler/suspect had been arrested and booked into the MCDC the day of the attack.

Police say the suspect, identified as houseless individual Theron D. Bates, had handed the dog over to police and then tried to run away.

However, Bates then ingested fentanyl shortly afterward and overdosed.

Police say they administered naloxone and took him to be treated before booking him into jail on a warrant. The PPB says it is currently investigating potential criminal or civil culpability.

Police confirmed that Bates is not the owner of the dog, but a friend of owner Jessie Miller, who reports himself as homeless. Bates was "babysitting" the dog for Miller.

KATU confirmed that the dog "Bubbie" was taken in by Multnomah County Animal Services for a mandatory 10-day quarantine and bite investigation.

However, police say that owner Jessie Miller and his mother Marie Miller appeared and convinced Animal Services to let the dog quarantine at Marie's home.

On Tuesday, April 17 the dog was transferred to Marie Miller. Jessie Miller then returned to her home and took the dog.

The whereabouts of Miller and the dog are currently unknown. Police are currently trying to locate him, but he does not have a fixed address.

Average anti-pitter zoosadist @Android raptor.

Before the bite? Are you for real? You're just going to kill a random dog before it even does something? No wonder Android raptor calls anti-pitters zoosadists. Killing it if it actually tries to attack is completely reasonable self defense that almost everyone can agree with. Killing it "preventatively" based on breed is not.

Poisoning a dog for being a pitbull is no better than people who used to feed outdoor cats bait laced with antifreeze.
Fuck you. Poisoning shitbulls is a public service. I'm gonna go spray the next one I see with a can of raid in the face

Have you ever had a dog? I mean a real dog, not a yappy lapdog. All of mine, male or female, had to be restrained from killing other dogs (and humans) that became even the slightest bit threatening, because even a dog knows what you don't: you put down the threat before it can hurt you or you loved ones.

It feels like a typical portland day, mauled by dog, dog gets handled by stranger, owner shirks all responsibility by fleeing and ODing on fent.
Sadly it wasn't the xylazine-laced stuff so the Narcan was able to save their life.
Oh, sorry I misunderstood. Why would anyone happen to have fentanyl while getting attacked though?
Its Portland. Why wouldn't you carry pocket sand fent around just in case? Worst case the guy gets distracted by the high, best case he's knocked unconscious or just OD's.

Yes, I've had three pitbulls. One died of skin cancer at age 6 and one is currently dying of nasal cancer at age 8. One is 1 yr old. I had a terrier/poodle mix growing up and then a beagle/English springer spaniel mix. Terrier died at 8 of stomach cancer and we had to put the spaniel down at age 12 bc she couldn't stand anymore bc of her arthritis.
The one who is dying loves all humans but hates other dogs. I've found this type of dog to be more dog-aggressive than human aggressive and they should never be let off leash or allowed to approach dogs they don't know. They need a lot of exercise and are usually owned by the worst owners and poorly socialized. They can still be good dogs though.

To be fair i've had pitbulls too but don't let them near kids because pitbulls are inherently a violent dog breed regardless. Say what you will but they're good for hunting especially some Georgia Boar because the Georgia Boar is just like a pitbull version of a pig.

Apparently the tactic works with other races,
Who the fuck discovered you can make dogs stop biting by fingering their assholes?
With pitbulls, that isn't effective because they are bred to bite no matter what.
What about stabbing it in the neck and give it an ear-to-ear smile? dont tell me the fuckers keep biting after that
The absolute state of zoomer "humor"

Anyway, the borzoi are no joke, its a crocodile disguised as a dog

Borzois are the superior breed of dogs especially for hunting just like the Lab or Poodle. But of course the fucked up world that is dog breeding has ruined buying a useful pet as just owning one just to own one.

Just kibble. I think the skin cancer one was from her being abandoned as a baby and having mange, before we adopted her. Nose cancer could be from vaping, smoking weed etc. in the house. I don't but other family members do. Stomach cancer, I honestly have no clue.
Two of the dogs that died from cancer were both pitbull rescues from the street. Who knows what they got into. Both probably ate trash. Only the spaniel mix didn't die from cancer.

Almost every dog can be trained, it just takes time and patience. It's less about being dominant than it is tempering your actions with love and kindness. Dogs want to please you, and if they understand they will be rewarded with love and affection (as well as treats and hugs) they will do whatever you ask of them.

And to be fair the two breeds I had (GSD and Rottweiler) are also known for being aggressive and violent but both have been bred for specific tasks, and have to be trained accordingly. That's the advantage of a dog breed; you know what they are predisposed to. Pitbulls have been bred to be violent by idiot backyard breeders who have no idea what they're doing, so you get violent dogs who often inherit genetic disorders from inbreeding.

I would not want to train such a dog simply because I have no idea what their provenance is and what they were bred to do, The GSD was very violent toward humans, but he came from a line that was bred to be exactly that, an aggressive watchdog. He never hurt me, my parents or our cat (I used to stick my face in his jaws as a 10 year old, horrifying my parents) but my parents sent us to a trainer, and I trained him to do as I asked.

My Rottweiler was a junkyard dog I rescued and trained for a long time, but she responded well and lived in a home with several cats and three rats. She was also aggressive towards humans and male dogs (and horses!) but much more selective than the GSD, which was interesting, but I never let my guard down with her, because you simply can't. Only at home was I sure how she'd react.

I would not get a Siberian/Alaskan husky or Border Collie or because they are high maintenance dogs, needing a lot of exercise and attention, which is very hard when you live in an apartment. These are working dogs bred to pulling sleds as a team or herd farm animals and they absolutely need to work. Even my Rottweiler had a need to hard the cats, when she felt they doing something not allowed, such as leaving the apartment or going near a window. Very amusing to see her stare them down and make them go where she wanted them to be, all without nipping or barking. But that's what they were bred to do, herd cattle without nipping or panicking a herd, which takes more skill than simply tearing up strangers who break in.

Each dog is different of course, and some will defy all expectations and breeding, but generally you will know how they behave. The only dogs that I had trouble with at the shelter when I worked were pitbull breeds, simply because they were unpredictable. They were the majority of the dogs turned in for being too aggressive by people who had no idea how to handle a dog, which is sad. Some can be great pets with the right person.

@Feline Supremacist To be fair I like plenty of dogs too and I have trained a few by myself. I just like pitbulls when a nigger comes along acting tough and then the bull which I love so dear commits the act of violence for me. Hell Sallie Ann Jarett is one of the most famous pitbulls I know and one of the few Union dogs I respect.

Sounds like pitbulls are just cancer the way you're describing things.

I wouldn't rule out bad breeding and especially inbreeding in the one who died of skin cancer especially bc she had like 5 extra toes. She had this flap on one paw that looked like a funny toe but then you lift the flap and there was a bunch of tiny baby toes clumped on top of each other.
I didn't choose these dogs, my sister just adopted them and dumped them on the rest of the family. Pitbull dogs were never my first choice, I really like spaniels and always wanted a lil lap dog. All our dogs have been medium to large. But it's hard not to love a dog you're with everyday.
Our young pitbull was a sting operation by my father and sister. They paid 600 dollars for her and drove like 5 hours. The vet said she has really good body composition so I'm praying she will live a long, happy life and not get cancer like the others. She is 25 percent German shepherd.

Be careful. Some German Shepherds have rear hip issues, and they're not exactly low-energy dogs.

A German Shepard isn't bred to maul even if it's idiotic to do so. Pitbulls are. That's why they attack unprovoked. There's no way you can "cure" them; in fact, in those videos where pitbulls retreat after biting, it's likely they're mixed with other race. The purebred pitbull genes make those dogs stupidly violent, ready to kill no matter what.

Many dog races were made for hunting. However, they're not meant to hunt humans or other dogs. Pitbulls are. They were specifically bred to just kill. That's why you'll never be able to properly train a pitbull to be peaceful, no matter what pitbull mommies and other shitbull owners say.
