Obviously, Chris bears most of the blame for his delusions and stubbornness, but is it unpopular to say that trolls might also share a sliver of blame? They've been lying to Chris for so long that he doesn't believe a word they say, even when they're trying to help him.

I'm a fan of paranormal kookery and just letting you know it's not white noise he was listening to but binaural beats, from Wikipedia:

A binaural beat is an auditory illusion perceived when two different pure-tone sine waves, both with frequencies lower than 1500 Hz, with less than a 40 Hz difference between them, are presented to a listener dichotically, that is one through each ear. For example, if a 530 Hz pure tone is presented to a subject's right ear, while a 520 Hz pure tone is presented to the subject's left ear, the listener will perceive the auditory illusion of a third tone, in addition to the two pure-tones presented to each ear. The third sound is called a binaural beat, and in this example would have a perceived pitch correlating to a frequency of 10 Hz, that being the difference between the 530 Hz and 520 Hz pure tones presented to each ear.

Basically if you listen to two different specific tones, one in each ear it tricks your brain into thinking there's a third tone which is called a binaural beat. (FYI: In very rare cases it cause seizures if you play it loudly or for a prolonged time through headphones)

There is also brain entrainment and neural oscillations/brainwave patterns measurable in electroencephalography (EEG) which basically is research that shows the brain has different states which correspond to different frequencies of electrical pulses such as a relaxed state or a focused state and brain entrainment is an attempt using rhythmic stimulus such as pulsing beats (Such as binaural beats) or flashing lights to match those brainwaves, from what I can tell research is ongoing there's been mixed results but it's been found to help with dealing with things like stress, anxiety and pain although it's only about as effective as listening to music.

Anyway to get onto the pseudoscience over the years they've been sites like I-Doser selling mp3s of binaural beats named after drugs claiming it has similar effects and called them "Digital Drugs" leading to a moral panic for a short time and now crazy people for who run of the mill pseudoscience wasn't crazy enough for them claim it has magical properties and can cause the things Chris listens to like turning your hair blue or suddenly causing a sex change. (They often combine Binaural Beats with things like hypnosis or claim it has spiritual powers)

Maybe but don't underestimate the power of stupid. There have been people who have had infections eat all the skin off the top of their head down to the bone and not go in until someone else noticed.
