I see people say a lot these days that the pendulum will swing back (politically, in America) either soon or in a long time or never.
For the long time or never believers, I just wonder why they think this.
Has the progressive pendulum in America never swung back before? Will it only become more conservative after some kind of civil war?
iirc, America has gone back to being more conservative a few times in its history, but I am definitely no American history buff.
There have been very, very few decades of the "march of progress" being reversed.
1810s - Had some reversion of the French Revolutionary/Napoleon's liberalism, also had the Second Great Awakening in the US which helped control immorality
1830s/1840s - Gave us Victorian morality, a stark contrast to the morality of the 1790-1830 era (and also huge leaps forward for political liberalism since the actual "far-right" pretty much died off past this point)
1870s - End of Reconstruction and the national attempt to push black supremacy. Unfortunately, it also ended serious attempts to send them back to Africa.
1930s - Excesses of the "jazz age" and 20s were to a degree repudiated. Rise of fascism and Nazism
Late 70s/1980s - Excesses of the hippies, sexual revolution, etc. repudiated, rise of modern Christian moral culture. Black supremacy and concepts like busing kids to inner city schools defeated
I'm not trying to do a trad larp here (since a lot of what I believe in until the past decade would be considered liberal), but you'll notice is that each time, the pendulum never swung back particularly far and eventually the side of "progress" consolidated its gains and pushed even more forward. All blacks wanted to do 1860 - 1950 was vote and hold office like whites. All gays wanted to do before the 1950s was not go to prison for gay sex, then all they wanted to do until the 2010s was get married like a straight couple. Well, look where we are today.
I think this is just a typical trend of liberalism, which has been the dominant and nigh-universal ideology in the West since the final death of absolute monarchism in the 1830s. Conservatism now is basically "conservative liberalism" and is thus self-defeating by nature (read up on Robert Peel, founder of the UK Conservative Party and a popularizer of the word "conservative" to see what I mean). The only ideologies which succeeded at halting the pendulum are fascism/Nazism, and for some reason communism, since despite degeneracy and degenerate beliefs being common among revolutionaries, those types of people always end up in the gulag and morals stay fixed from that point forth.
tl;dr we're fucked
I don't think it will this time. I feel like the WEF is artificially holding it to one side, and it'll only drop when freedom-loving people around the world get violent and eliminate them. Sadly, the WEF is acclimating the global society to tolerate increasing levels of tyranny, so they're grooming us to never do this, and they seem to be succeeding, given the way we behaved during COVID.
Yes. They control the media, every major corporation, and every major institution. The "opposition" like Donald Trump is completely ineffective and exists mainly to redefine the "far-right" as ever further left, which is where you get Fox News simping for (adult) troons and blacks and Hispanics getting free gibs and affirmative action from "conservatives." I fully expect by the 2040s we'll be talking about "based drag queens in kindergartens" because some drag queen said that kids can only change their gender, not their species.
