Honestly I'm surprised we're not seeing more stuff like this. Normally it's rural areas are racists because the majority of White people live there; far away from anyone not white. However, it's rare to see these same people trying to force their way in these areas.
If I'm being honest I expect more stories like this in the near future. With more and more people clogging up the cities and suburbs, they're eventually going to have to relocate them somewhere. And people behind real estate will do whatever they can to purchase property in order to make them rich. What better way to drive our the locals who want to escape the harsh city life is to bring the city to them!
I agree in principle, but I highly doubt hiking will ever become a beloved past-time of black people. As much as the UK has shit weather up and down the island, Scotland is particuarly shit, and black people have largely (historically) avoided going there for that exact reason. Black people, as shocking as this is to suggest, do not like spending large amounts of time outdoors in a largely damp and grey climate, walking for hours at a time.
They do however, love hanging out in parks. Go to any park in England during a hot day, and there's at least on black family there setting up a picnic that almost appears to be a mobile restaraunt. Which, I've nothing against - in principle, I admire the commitment to raise a park picnic above the sad little foil trays most white English people use.
I'm only mentioning because it's an idicator of how different ethnic groups use the outdoors, and it's not even limited to the UK. You see the same kind of split in the US. Black people like using the outdoors as an extension of their home, a place to enjoy food and see family. White people like to use the outdoors more for solitary activities, like camping out in the wilderness, or fishing. There's overlaps and outliers obviously, but this observation is something people have noticed long before you or I were born.
There'll be more articles, more black faces on camping websites - but ultimately this sort of thing goes nowhere.
It's like black people and swimming. We can pretend like the only reason behind it is "access to facilities" (as if Africa isn't surrounded by an ocean) and make all the efforts in the world to raise the number of black swimmers, but there's just some in-built and inherent traits you can't brute-force. Again, there's always outliers to these trends about talent/preference/whatever - think Tiger Woods with golf, or Eminem with rap - but that's what they are, outliers. Different ethnic groups have different things going on, and that's fine.
