I'd compare it more to cancer treatment. We could get chemo now, which will be extremely painful, but it gives us a chance of coming out on the other side alive. Ignoring the treatment might mean the next few weeks are comfortable, but in 6 months we will be 70lbs and vomiting out our bone marrow in hospice care.
