Steve1989MREInfo / Steve1989 / Steve Thomas - that guy that eats old MREs

As much as I like Steve's videos, it's heartwarming to know there are people for whom the Internet is an afterthought. This is his hobby, he's sharing it with us, and he has probably never referred to it unironically as "content."

I like to picture Steve sleeping like a beardy ginger vampire, arms crossed over his chest as he lies motionless inside a giant olive drab retort pouch.
Honestly the funniest part is people saying it was the Chinese quality that killed him.

Finished the humanitarian MRE, interesting departure from usual tough blocks of food since it's made for people with no teeth. I thought from the intro it will have peanut butter, which is a terrible idea in a ration for random people who can't speak English, but it's solved by substituting for Sunflower seeds (which makes me wonder about the taste difference).

Started to watch the MRE of the future, shrinking food and make it palatable is interesting, but the question if it can be mass produced to actually be worth it economically.

There's a notable difference in his appearance between the new vids and when he's uploaded several at once before, same thing. He probably sits on any given review for months before sharing.

Never fiveget that Steve ate a 119-year old ration. I'm not sure which meal gave him botulism, but he's relatively careful with what he stuffs into his face even if he is readily willing to try to push that same boundary if a meal isn't outright deadly.
The botulism MRE was actually still in date, IIRC it was a Russian or Ukrainian ration that just had a freak occurrence botched can in it.

Same, although it depends if Steve Wallis counts as a food YouTuber. He has the opposite relationship to MREs, but can sure cook a stew without the rangers noticing him.

I wouldn't consider Steve Wallis a food YouTuber.

He almost exclusively does stealth urban camping instead of any backcountry setups.

You can tell from his packing and packaging that he bought most of the ingredients at the grocery store on the ride to the campout and just brought the whole pack.

He also not infrequently gives up on cooking if he gets spooked and walks out of the woods to eat at a strip mall across the road.

He also got sick from this Chinese MRE. Some of the worst rations he's had have been chink rations. He really harshly criticizes this while eating it, and as you know, if even Steve can't find something good to say about something, it's really really bad.

According to the Youtuber wiki, the 2015 Ukrainian ration (also in date) that sent him to the hospital was before his YouTube channel. I'm not sure if that's true but I can't find it.

He brings the camera to the grocery store a lot of the time, so yeah. (I liked his hot tip to hollow out a loaf of bread and put one of those salad mixes inside of it.) At the beginning of his channel, he did teach how to make a pizza that's every bit as good as Pizza Hut, using ingredients you find in someone's kitchen/the food bank.

What I like about Steve Wallis is that he clearly has a lot of anxiety about being caught by cops/rangers/guys doing landscaping. It's like those ghost shows when the crew is legitimately scared of being eaten by ghosts, vs. the ones where they're putting on an act for the camera. The ghosts aren't real either way, but it's much more fun to watch people panic themselves.

Who the fuck puts M&Ms in assorted nuts? Jesus Christ Americans.
Most will call it ‘trail mix’ here, and it’s honestly awesome. The sweetness offsets the sodium content of the nuts.

Glad to see Steve back. One of the best “put in background, do other things” channels on YouTube. He looks good too.

I bought some Mountain House chili mac and beef during the beginning of the COVID-19 panic and it has been taking up a bit of space in the garage. I’m told it tastes pretty good, but I’m not too keen on digging into emergency food supplies to sate curiosity. Not sure what the true shelf life of that stuff was - probably expired - but it wasn’t cheap. Oh well.

Go for it. You need to rotate through your emergency supplies anyway to keep them (reasonably) fresh, a giant pile of MRE's does you no good if they've gone rancid and at 3 years old you want to at least inspect them and what better excuse for some Steve1989 pretend.

I used to watch Camping With Steve weekly until his wife's sudden death last year unexpectedly in her sleep (in her early 30s IIRC).

Obviously a horrible tragedy that would break any man.

But his community formed a reactionary hugbox around him, mass flagging any YT videos speculating on the cause of death and chasing away anyone who asked any questions.

When Steve Wallis did return, he publicly didn't release any details or show any curiosity over the cause of death. He did though throw shade at any of his fans that did ask legitimate if inconveniently-timed and uncomfortable questions.

It's too bad because his wholesome channel wasn't the same after that and seeing how Steve and his normie audience were happy to play censorious ostrich.

You really shouldn't be storing food in a garage at all. The freeze dried mountain house stuff claims something like a 30 year shelf life. As long as your climate isn't too bad they should probably be ok but you need to take them out of the garage and probably test one out. At least to tell if you do actually like them.

Keep a store of shelf stable foods and water on hand for emergency purposes. You don't have to plan for the end of the world, most likely it'll be something simple like a natural disaster or a cascading grid failure that keeps power out for an extended duration.

Store your food in a cool, dry, dark place. Take note of the expiration dates and make a plan for rotating them as they expire. You don't need anything fancy, regular canned foods will do, keep the old ones in the front and new ones in the back. Consult your food stores when planning meals and incorporate the things that are coming on their best by date into your meal plans. Don't buy 500 cans of beans all in the same trip unless you want to eat 500 cans of beans in a short period of time one day. Buying an extra can every time you shop can help you build up a good store of foods that naturally spreads the dates out over time. Prioritize calorie density and nutrition. Soups may be nice to have but they're generally very low calorie for the size of can.

Absolutely, a sudden untimely death can change a man so it's no surprise the product has changed. I can respect that he was able to move forward in some way. I think the substance is still there just with a bit of a bitter flavor to it. One thing about that situation is I believe his wife was basically his business partner for the channel doing the editing and channel maintenance stuff so I'm sure that made dealing with the curiosity of strangers harder. I can't really imagine how I would handle it were I in his position. Principles can go out the window when your world is shattered and you are inundated with people digging at your wounds (intentionally or innocently). After about the first thousand people innocently asking the same questions they probably stop sounding much different from the trolls "asking" those questions with ill intent.

If you have any sources of speculation that they tried to burry I'd be interested to check those out. All I saw on it was a "Guys wife died from the vax" 4chan thread I stumbled on and then later the official statements on the channel. I knew the video comments were in north Korea mode but the video flagging is new news to me.
