I'd imagine it was pretty chill from the 60s to 90s. Anything after that is dubious at best. I'm a music head though and that's all I really associate that area with prior to the notorious poop maps.

Once upon a time junkies, homeless and thugs were more quarantined in American society, kept in check by the police and a better culture, everyone else was free to ignore them and live their lives in peace, progressive types might have payed lip service about them "getting a bad break" but still just ignored them.
But then social media/Woke came along and called the progressives' bluff, now they were hardcore guilt tripped and forced to put their money where their mouth was and let the assholes literally shit all over everything because they're too much spineless pussies to tell the assholes to fuck off and stay out their sight because oh woe is me, that's not "nice"
Because the vast majority of people in shitty situations are there because they are shitty people that create said shitty situations and if you don't tell them to fuck off they spread their shit everywhere.
Not everyone is born with a good head on their shoulders, that's just the way it is, but the left can't face the facts, so it's transitioned to just shoot up fentanyl, wipe shit on everything and give up on life, because boo hoo, real life isn't Sesame Street and they just can't handle that, so they're literally letting America's cities fall apart around them.
Since San Fran was synonymous with progressive for decades, it's being particularly hit hard by this rot.
