Related, but this is why urbanists hate tunnels and skywalks despite them basically providing them with what they want, a way to get from point A to point B without cars, with shops and restaurants along the way.

Most of the critics of these systems, are, of course, the people that make downtowns sketchy to begin with. Their usual cover is playing the race card, but the problem is that they're not there to shop or eat, it's to loiter and in general be a problem. And of course, bugmen like to virtue signal and will side with these types even though they really shouldn't, because they were the ones (not the freeways) to cause downtowns to go into decline in the first place.

The best part of this, fuck cars hates pedestrians, any time pedestrian infrastructure is posted they call it "carbrained", or declare it as car infrastructure. Njb and the fuck cars urbanist groups want high density unlivable environments, otherwise they'd be pushing for places to have more over/under foot paths.

I almost killed one of them when my loicense was still green, I was casually cruising through some quiet suburbs to get more confidence in car control and someone was cycling along the parallel sidewalk. Speaking of downtown commerce, have you noticed that outlet malls and other open air malls that are away from the city center have started to rise in popularity? People travel hours just to hang out and have a half day of shopping.

Those have been around for a while, in my neck of the woods, there's two extremely popular outlet malls located about halfway between San Antonio and Austin that draw crowds from all over. Both of them have been around since the early 1990s, and while some of have been built in more recent years, a lot of them on the outskirts of major areas (or in some cases, way, WAY out of town) have failed.

The downtown malls largely failed because the one-two punch of the people actually living in the area tended to be the lunchtime rowdy type (which of course, were pulling shoplifting scams all the time), and many of the downtown malls that were built weren't big draws anyway because people had the same stores and stuff in their local regional malls.

Unlike dying suburban malls, the downtown malls' food courts were a big draw even as the rest of the mall failed.
