People obsessed with luxury goods will often bribe salespeople with gifts, dinners and even vacations in an attempt to climb higher on waiting lists for desirable items such as Hermès Birkins, Rolex Submariners and Patek Philippe Nautilus'.
It's not unusual for people to spend 6 figures on products they don't want (clothes, jewellery, home decor etc.) in order to establish a sales history with a company while in pursuit of specific items.
Even after they've spent thousands on unnecessary purchases they have to attend what is essentially an interview prior to being given permission to buy what they wanted all along:

But, as seen in the video, the girl wasn't even offered what she originally wanted. Yes, she paid $8k USD for something she didn't
really want. This is all part of the plan.
Luxury companies are obsessed with artificial scarcity. They will typically offer customers a version of the item they want but not exactly what they're after in order to preserve the air of exclusivity and prestige that surrounds certain items. This also ensures return customers hoping to finally nail that 'grail' item they've been longing for.
If you refuse an exclusive item offered by a salesperson you're less likely to be offered exclusive items in the future. This obviously encourages unnecessary purchases in order to maintain your reputation as a reliable customer.
If you're caught reselling items you will be contacted by these companies, scolded like a child and blacklisted:

But, as mentioned by other posters, this is what the luxury-obsessed want. Exclusivity means everything to them.
