That's one of the traps I notice a lot with people is the idea of "change" and "progress" always being a default good no matter what. Change for the sake of change often isn't. Think about it this way, when is the last time he took a hard line unpopular position on something controversial besides saying "nigger"? Even if this is the case I would say LA in general is to blame, but that Anisa probably made that turn first. Honestly, of the two I'm starting to think it might be Ian that's the one with BPD.
