what's your counter top preference?

What kind of wood would you use for a countertop? i would be stuck between doug fir and cherry? but i have seen some great looking walnut used for bars

no it can be any material and the use of it would be up to you, but that is not a bad choice

It would depend on cost and desired look. I think something with interesting patterns and vivid colors, natural or stained/dyed could be a lovely addition to any room.

For a counter you'll want something hard-wearing, you definitely want to avoid spending on fancy wood only to have it fall apart or warp. I'd contact a good carpenter or kitchen fitter, somebody who does outdoor bars might also be a good idea. You want a super tough counter that'll look good for a long time.
I'd look at off the shelf counters for ideas, even if you want natural materials the fake stuff can be good looking enough to give you ideas.

Consider reclaimed timber, you can claim it's for style, budget, or to save the trees:

I'd prefer granite, but if you must go with wood, cherry seems good.

I love our granite because you can put ANYTHING on that sucker. With limited space, it's crucial to not have to seek out a potholder or trivet for a hot and heavy cast iron pan if the stovetop is full. Plus being naturally cool, it can help chill down a finicky dish; handy for certain sauces or custards.
