How do you suppose you clean up most of the earth's habitable surface when there's nowhere that isn't irradiated?
You don't clean that shit up from an already irradiated position. You decontaminate it from an already clean area. Unless you think the nuclear equivalent of getting off of work to go shower in a septic tank is a workable idea?
Most of the radioactive isotopes produced by a nuclear explosion have extremely short half-lives, and total radiation levels decrease by about 90% every two or three days.
And no, nobody's planning to carpet nearly uninhabited farmland with nukes.
