As an example, Japan developed it's HSR in the 1960s whereas China developed it in the 2010s. It could legitimately be argued that that section of Tokyo was less developed vs the China.

You know, sometimes when I think about history, I get wrapped up in how different the mindset of people were in that particular time, and just how difficult it actually is to construct a model in your brain of a person who lived a life totally different and totally alien from your own. But for fuck's sake, the Ukraine War has barely turned a year old. I actually remember when the war first broke out quite clearly. And I clearly remember there was a certain doomer mentality around Ukraine's ultimate fate. To a lot of people the Russia Stronk memes seemed at least somewhat credible, since there hadn't yet been a war of sufficient scale to truly put them to the test. I still distinctly recall someone claim the Spetsnaz were the best in the world at urban combat, a claim that seems fucking outlandish in the wake of Bakhmut. And even if you knew those memes were bullshit, the prevailing wisdom was that Russia would do what Russia do and throw bodies at the problem, which it can obviously do at greater scales than Ukraine can.

All this to say, the prognosis for Ukraine towards the beginning of the war was grim to say the least. And it would follow that many residents of Kyiv fled their homes based upon that belief. But now that the war has drug on a bit, it's become more and more apparent that Russia probably isn't going to get the unconditional victory it sought, and taking Kyiv is probably off the table entirely. So now operating under the belief that Kyiv will be relatively safe for the foreseeable future, some of these refugees have opted to return to their homes, as people are won't to do.

Note for the uninformed: this image was created at the time mass shootings started to become prevalent in the news and this was originally created as satire to mock the gun grabbers.

I don't know why but some part of me sort of predicted what would be a joke in 2013 would become reality in clown world today and I was unfortuanly right. Something that was a satire talking point is now an actual movement. But it makes me have a deep thunk moment:

Is society really just regressing to the point of becoming increasingly infantile? Basically it never stops, they keep trying to take things away from people that are even tangentially dangerous. It seems to be happening with everything from guns to speech at this point. Eventually we won't be able to own a stove because it could start a fire.

I think there are things out there that are inherently dangerous, but we accept their place in society because of the good they do in serving people. Accidents are tragic, but they are something we chose to accept as a result of living in a society with freedom.
