CN Disney’s race-swapped Little Mermaid a flop in China—possibly worst 2023 opening: repor - "The film has earned only $13,000 in Chinese pre-sales."

The film has earned only $13,000 in Chinese pre-sales.

Disney's new The Little Mermaid film, starring black actress Halle Bailey as the main character Ariel, has a Chinese poster that obscures the character's race, as the film is on track to flop in the Communist-led country.

According to Comic Book Resources, "the film is likely to be Disney's worst-performing Chinese release this year," and has only earned $13,000 in pre-sales.

In comparison, Cruella, the last Disney live-action adaptation to hit Chinese theaters, grossed 1.6 million upon opening, and Mulan grossed $307,000 in one day of presales and $23 million upon opening.

Disney has also created alternative marketing for the communist country by releasing a different poster than the one in the US. Elijah Schaffer on Twitter posted a side-by-side comparison and asked, "can you spot the difference."

Human Event's Jack Posobiec tweeted, "Disney's poster for the Little Mermaid in China speaks for itself" and another made it clear and noted that the actress's black skin was made blue.

This is not the first time Disney has downplayed a character's race in their marketing to China. Famously the black actor John Boyega, who played Finn in The Force Awakens, was reduced in prominence in the Chinese poster from the American poster.

According to Variety, in addition to minimizing Boyega, they cut out additional non-white characters entirely for the Chinese poster.

According to CNN, Chinese state media denied the change was due to racism in the country.

Currently, The Little Mermaid sits at a 71 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The New York Post review said, "Despite real actors, CGI and brand new material, 'Mermaid' is the studio’s latest flesh-and-blood cash grab that’s more lifeless than far better two-dimensional painted drawings."

The Little Mermaid is one of a few Hollywood films to garner a release in China after the country had cracked down on US releases during the Covid pandemic.

I honest to god thought they had used some kind of CGI to make her look more fishy by putting her eyes more or less on the sides of her head. Then I found out no, they actually cast someone that fucking ugly IRL. If they were determined to find a black lass, they surely could have found a light skinned one that didn't look like some kind of downie.
Bitch looks like they should've titled the movie "The Little Hurrrmaid".

I don't understand why, in this terrible project to remake perfectly good animated films as CGI horrors, they cast a Princess who doesn't look like the fucking Princess merchandise. The Princess merchandise is an enormous income stream for Disney. The IRL Princesses needed to look like the fucking dolls, bags, etc etc that little girls already own. Those are some of the most recognisable and fiercely defended visual IP in the world.

Mulan, Jasmine, Belle: those IRL castings all looked like little girls already know and expect those Princesses to look. This lassie looks literally nothing like Ariel. Ariel has bright red hair, pale skin, and a green tail. Look at even any stylised representation of Ariel for proof: Ariel is red and green and beige the same way Snow White shit is blue and yellow and little bit red.

The black Ariel doll is not selling: the film isn't even out here and I've seen the doll on at least 30% discount everywhere. Meanwhile Elsa still sells full price. Their actual target market are looking at this and saying "that's not Ariel" because Disney have burnt a visual image of the character into their brains and the kids don't want something else.

It's a bit like remaking 101 Dalmatians (again) but deciding dalmatians are over represented, so we'll use 101 Rottweilers instead and this will be fine. The kids won't notice or be perturbed by the total lack of spots.

Every one of these live action remakes has been fucking terrible anyway. I have no idea what this "shit on your major IP" remake project is about. It can't be "wokery" or representation issues because the Lion King is about fucking lions. Dumbo is about a fucking elephant. It's just like every cunt ran out of ideas whilst waiting for Frozen 3.

The reasons for these live action remakes isn't just to ape off their IP's and make a quick buck but to also "fix" Disney's movies. Disney has been told by Woke activists and BlackRock that their past movies, the movies that made them the power house in family entertainment, are "problematic" and need to reflect a "modern audience" and be about "current political issues". This is Disney self-flagellating themselves and trying to "fix" their movies. Too many white princesses? Make most of them black. Women are damsels in distress? Make them girl bosses who don't need no man. Also add in a bunch of female empowerment and gay representation and you not only raise your ESG score but also "fixed" the movie in the eyes of Woke activists and BlackRock.

The problem with this is that normies don't like the things they love and grew up with being changed for the worse. You also of course have the target audience, the kids, not liking this stuff. They all watched the Disney movies that their parents watched as kids and they don't like this new stuff. Globohomo and Woke activists need to realize that no matter how much they try, they can't change human nature or history. It is a losing battle for them but goddamn are they going to keep trying. I would almost pity them if not for the damage they have done to society and culture.

I think there's money to be made breeding actors and actresses to carefully fit ESG and national requirements.

Imagine a racemixed chinky girl who is technically black but just looked like a chink? $$$$
Feifei Zhong probably fits the part.
Blasian pop singer raised in China but speaks great English. Looks more Chinese then Congolese.

Disney keeps making them because while they are indeed terrible, they have made a ton of money. The live action remake of The Lion King made 1.7 billion alone -

Disney is a company with a lot of debt and a need for massive hits. The live action remakes are almost guaranteed to make money regardless of quality. I think people might be tiring a bit of the remakes, and Disney is running out of classic IP to remake, but they're going to keep doing them until people stop showing up to watch them.

101 Pitbulls (released with hard R, eventually an unrated cut leaks and is banned in several countries)

And directed by Quantin Tarantino. :story:

At this rate, how long before Disney face bankruptcy and some rival company acquire them?
A long time given how expansive the company is. I would be fine with it happening sooner rather than later though, as long as the acquirers are aware that "go woke, go broke".

Also, well would mermaids be from Innsmouth? She has the look.
Don't know why they cast this woman when Lori Lightfoot is clearly part fish.

Fuck, I'd unironically watch that or Tarantino's Star Trek.

"Say Kirk, by any chance did yoo see ah "Dead Klingon Storage" sign oon me transportah room?"
"Nay ye say? O' course ye dinnae see one because it innae there!"

Some funny comments in Douban.

Too marvelous; strong recommendation.
The film realistically portrays the Age of Sail, when the Four Seas were teemed with slave ships. It was a fact that the most populous race underwater was Black.
Slavers checked the health of Blacks by looking at their teeth, the subpar were all thrown overboard and won't make it to dry land. Hence today's Blacks who live in Europe and America have healthy teeth.
Also Black slaves were sold to white people by their Black chiefs.
I think this film is well made: the Western underwater culture belongs to Black people.

This film discriminates against many communities after all.
Why aren't there fats in the cast, why no disabled, why no homosexuals? Isn't that discrimination? My ideal protagonist: a 600kg, blind, bald, stuttering, Black AMAB lesbian who was victim to domestic violence and bullying at school... I need to pile on more descriptions unfortunately I am not educated enough to do so.

Some holier-than-thou types have started saying you can't discriminate, you can't say this, you can't say that. Why should we let American political correctness dominate Chinese culture? I pay for a ticket to watch beautiful girls and guys, good acting skills, good drama, good special effect. If I want to watch ugly things I can do so for free in real life! To put an ugly mermaid in a movie is like misreading an essay question in an exam. You can write up a storm but you'll end up with a naught. If any of you likes American PC, please go to America, don't fuck up China.

Tarantino's Star Trek.
Alien women with twelve pairs of feet.

Yeah let me tell you a little secret about the mystical Orient that current Hollywood is fundamentally incapable of understanding - all of us in some way or another have a cultural, historical and sexual fetish for crème de caucasiens. In certain places, particularly Indochina, dark skin is viewed as a symbol of drudgery, uncleanliness and too much time in the sun. The skin whitening industry is absolutely titanic - even in India. Whole legends and myths in Chinese, Japanese and Korean culture equivocate beauty with whiteness. Blame the import of prior Western standards, but if black people really want to go through the plantation experience that so many are convinced they're having in America, they can try switching Google translate on some Chinese message boards that would make Don Black go "Hey, that's just nasty".

Chinks aren't going to pay money to look at niggers. They don't like them.

How hard is this to understand?
More importantly, the Chinese pay to see Hollywood movies to watch white people do white people things. (Which is why they paid a fortune to have Matt Damon star in one of their movies being himself.) They certainly do not understand, or even respect this weird globalist aspect to filmmaking that is currently predominating Hollyjew atm.
