I'm a woman (not even a conservative one) and I mostly agree with Null. It's reassuring to hear a man say they're creeped out by the oversexualisation of girls in anime. I also think he's wise to avoid e-girls of all kinds for multiple reasons, not least the risk they pose.
He's also very funny. Never underestimate the power of funny, especially when combined with kindness.
n=1 but I doubt I'm alone.
Being creeped out by that shit in anime is fine and normal and is far from a hot take here. It's just the flippant and disingenuous dismissal that is internet meming turned shared cult delusion from the culture war bullshit. Most anime you never hear about and never leaves Japan because it's completely bog standard mundane bullshit akin to what's in the west. Just because creeps latched on to some dumb shit, say Minky Momo, doesn't mean that somehow, retrospectively, the creators of the show imbued it with pedophilia. Your understanding of the entirety of Japan's animation industry is based on the POV of those perverts. Anime is literally just Japanese Animation.
The Internet Is Not The Real World.
The fact that you guys do this totally disengenuous thing of deliberating misstating what is going on or what is being discussed like, "null is just creeped out by oversexualization." Yeah, nobody here is upset about that. There's just no sexualization at all in Spirited Away. You guys have lost the farm and in an attempt to Own the Libs(tm) are starting to become the shit you laughed at. It's a tale as old as time. It is an endless cycle in the history of the internet. Why can't you guys see it happening to you?
Of course some of you people are so far off the rails you unironically believe the Satanic Panic of the 80s was Based On A True Story(tm) and not actually another social contagion. Sounds familiar.
It's just like the woke assholes needing to take ever woker and ludicrous claims to problematize shit. The standards in the discussion are ever changing, there's no solid ground or standard to appeal to, just whatever people think other people want to hear. Just creates a feedback loop of ever-hotter takes. Nebuluous and ever-shifting takes and standards, and none of it is really sincere. You guys want to start being like that to? A bunch of fags akin to furries, who plagiarize Disney to fulfill a fetish, doesn't affect how I watch
Robin Hood. Or fuck, any of the PC-tripe that Disney has put out in the last few years.
Dungeons and Dragons being demonic, Harry Potter being witchcraft, Spirited Away is pedophilia... do you guys really want to circle back to the Religious Right of the 90s? You think they had something good going on?
Fuck anime, it's this really fake hot takes the right wing is starting to put out I'm starting to see. It's all to impress each other, because some people on the right post-Trump think the only way to beat them is become them. But it's all such a fucking farce. You know what goes on with people like Proud Boys and the trad movement? You know how many of those people do cocaine and hotwife and shit? When a person makes these ridiculous takes it's all fake and it's all to signal to other people.
The only way to charitably interpret old classics like
Alice in Wonderland using this insane and paranoid standard is through the lens of pedophilia and to rebuke anyone who likes it. Are you guys going to go that far? That's why I love using Spirited Away, it's basically Alice in Wonderland, except Alice in Wonderland actually was written with pedophilic intentions. If anything it's a less pedophilic version of one of the West's classics. The pedophilia is inherent right in that story. Lewis Carrol wrote the book while he was infatuated with a ~12 year old girl.
But I'm sure there's some ad hoc reason that's okay and not so big of a deal. Some Lowtaxian flippant dismissal to appeal to the general sensibilities of the forum and misdirect away from whatever the real agenda is.
It just all reminds me of when I was an immature twat, I dismissed lots of music and movies wholesale based on labels and irrelevant things, particularly avoided bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sisters of Mercy wholesale because they were labeled "goth," and hell, found out those bands themselves hated those labels. You guys act like some category always
must adhere to some sort of hard-and-fast rule, where everything is black and white, everything bad-or-good, and that every member of that category must inherit the properties of all other members.
The only reason I ever even watched anime to begin with is that I go out of my way to check out things I don't want to check out. I know how patronizing it sounds, but I had the exact same attitude, about anime and media in general... when I was a lot younger and had something to prove to other people about my tastes.
I'm getting tired of seeing the right wing slowly go off the rails again in response to the culture war. Don't think you fools are immune to that shit either. Memento mori.
