At a certain point in ~2017 I noticed someone had registered with a .govt.au account (socialist hospital employee) and found a bunch of people had also used .edu emails. If you try to register with an email containing "gov" "edu" or "ac.uk" (UK's .edu) you will get an error calling you a retard. I forced all those users to change their emails and the ones I couldn't get a hold of I just removed the email from and locked.

I wonder what kind of people are internet savvy enough to know about the farms and want to register but also tech illiterate enough to not understand why using .edu (or in that unique case a fucking government email) for doing so is beyond retarded.

There's a wild inconsistency in what was recovered. It either means the hack was incomplete like Chudbuds and is being passed off as fully successful, or graf has a weird-ass data retention policy. Some banned users are clean, other users look like they're talking to themselves (other half of convo missing), others transferred instances or deleted their account but everything is still there. I'm not a snitch or a fan of overreaching governmental bodies, but this seems like it would not fly in countries with expanded online privacy laws/Right to be Forgotten laws. Will graf be dragged before the European government in an ill-fitting suit?

I'm going to sperg about security for a bit here. From reading graf's statement about this hack, it seems locking down the admin area so it's whitelisted by IP is part of an incident response recipe and not the way they ordinarily do things. Fucking why? Why do you need to be able to browse the admin area from any IP in the world? Why is locking it down something you do after an incident? It's the very definition of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.

Additionally, why are admins daily driving with their superduper admin privileges? You know what would've limited this hack and the Kiwi Farms session cookie theft from months ago? Fucking using a regular account to interact with the website. I understand for Null that it's easier to janny from his main account as XF puts the tools right at your fingertips, but if you've ever admin'd a Pleroma instance, the mod tools are on completely different pages that you could easily use in a separate container tab on Firefox.

Having a separate admin and regular account is the most basic bitch security thing every corporation does and yet literally nobody online ever does this. Is it because these people have never had a real job? Even my retarded single user fediverse instance had a separate admin account, my posting account had zero special privileges.
