Plagued Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

The pride droids are what kill me. If you think all the regular rainbow merchandise going to the landfill was bad, just wait until all this PVC gets in there- practically unrecycalable, forever will litter the waste land when archeologists in 1000 years start digging shit up

It used to be that companies paid you to carry their logos around now people pay the vorporations so they be walking advertisements. Not even Machiavelli could envision the likes of modern liberalism.
There is liking a brand, a Franchise, then there's dedicating your whole being to it. It's not even a hobby collecting POP's, you don't put them together or anything, there's no real community, it's just a dumb figure. And then you have people going around wearing Coke T-shirts, literal walking billboards

It's as if these mass-produced plastic figures posess some spiritual value to them. Mind you, these are the same kinds of people who will mock christians for believing in an 'imaginary sky daddy' or whatever.

I think the total lsck of practical uses is preecisely what makes Funkos so appealing to bugmen. For them it's solely a means for going through the power process of desire and fulfillment without the expactatuon of creativity or effort in making use of the product - consumerim in it's most distilled form.

It is religious, having shrines to meaningless pop culture references that look like shit. It's nor art, it's just a brand exploiting you. You aren't special to them, just a number.

this whole ordeal is a stroke of genius.
Abuse of people with compulsive shopping disorder so they turn into fanatics which in turn will attract more retards and people with the same disorder, then claim that the term 'compulsive shopping' is derogatory until the DISM removes it from the list of mental disorders list OR claim you care for those people by giving some overpriced "compulsive shopping aficionado" sticker.

When it comes to videogame consoomers, some of them don't see themselves as "buying" a videogame, they say "Investing." How exactly are you investing when buying a game on steam, epic games or whatever digital storefront of choice? You're not, that's the answer.

Is concerning how effective they are at pushing political agendas with this method. Just look at Ben and Jerry's or whatever brand with a presence online. This is an odd loop: for they chase an agenda to be hip, while also pushing said agenda.

Uncle Ted was right.

I was told that Funko Pops were more or less relegated ti be trash fir the ocean due to the chemicals and waste it produces from the after effects of the plastic.

Why are people still collecting them?

While nike and other sport companies started it apple and other luxury brands took it to the limit, all iphone cases have a fucking hole so the logo can be seen

Makes sense with say +30yo consoles that arent in production and you can hardly find one thats not beat up to shit, still working or even in the original box, but even those are in a huge bubble right now and people who grew up with a nes are 50 and over

Now? There was a Calvin and Hobbes strip about that 30-35 years ago.

Ben and Jerry's deserves some credit because that was ALWAYS part of their business model. You bought them knowing you were buying some ex-hippie communist's ice cream. And the company genuinely believed their activism, since back in the 80s and 90s when Ben and Jerry actually ran the company, the CEO was paid no more than 5 times the lowest paid employee's wage. Wouldn't surprise me if even now, the corporation which owns them shoves their most irksome activist types into the Ben and Jerry's division.

Calvin and Hobbes was absolutely prophetic.

Yes... at the same time i have to see Jimmy Falon's face on cookie dough ice cream. If that ain't Consoomerism, I don't know what is

You really can't trust a goddamn thing you buy straight from China. At least the big brands in the US do some safety testing, and do regular recalls. China does not give a shit. They fucked up something as cheap as balloons. Who even knows what kind of industrial chemicals that poor girl was exposed to.
The really fun part is when you learn a lot of the stuff on these apps are "export only" AKA illegal to sell in China because they don't meet basic standards. This is especially true of electronic items sold on these apps.

Like I'm not going to pretend this stuff doesn't end up on the local market, but that's more risky, meanwhile selling the cheapest, most dangerous things to foreign countries? No problem whatsoever, almost no chance you'll ever face consequences.

I find this thread to be very disturbing. The standard of living is stagnating or declining in most places. We're on the precipice of the largest economic crash in the history of the human race, but people seem to be spending more money on frivolities. Not trying to sound like a Stormfag here, but I would pin a lot of the root cause on the hyper-individualist mindset of the west, a culture of inclusivity & the slow erosion of traditional social groups and dynamics. Straight up, the last couple generations of kids being raised on this hippie mentality where they're incessantly reminded they are "special" and encouraged to pursue whatever random shit "interests" them.

I think most of these people don't have a lot going on in their lives. Consumerism is the lowest effort means of filling a void. Having the worlds largest collection of Monster energy cans is a great way to make you feel better about your shit life without having to actually do anything about it. The time and money that would have gone into supporting a partner/house/children/hobby that takes actual skill and patience is instead wasted on meaningless bullshit (I realize the irony in a kiwi making this argument). For some of them it's probably not economically viable to have any of those things. Two people working full-time on minimum wage is barely enough money to cover living expenses and a single child. If yours is the only mouth to feed, you can afford all the Legos and video games you want. For other people the hippie bullshit is to blame. This retarded mentality that you should let people do whatever they want so long as "it isn't hurting anyone" is insane. This is how you end up with 40 year olds obsessed with children's toys or people walking around in fursuits in broad daylight. This behavior is kept in check with bullying. Do any of these people not realize how it's going to look when they're 60 years old, have no direction in life, no savings from a lifetime of poor financial planning and the only thing they have to show for it is a rented storage locker full of plastic garbage?

The other interesting part of this phenomenon are the grifters and side hustlers. There's probably some people in there that legitimately believe old Nintendo games are a great investment vehicle and stores of value:). You don't tend to hear about these people selling their collections unless they're already in dire financial straits. collectorfagging is a zero sum game.

This behavior reminds me of Hikikomori, Tang ping, Doomers etc. Maybe Consoomerism is another kind of societal withdrawal? a coping mechanism or pressure valve for people unable to confront reality?

Consuming isn't inherently bad. I work hard for my money and i like to spend some of it on cool shit that interests me. I don't use it as a basis for an identity though.

White elephant parties don't tend to actually have "white elephant" gifts. What are some real white elephant items?
In my specific sphere of autism it's obscure, obsolete computer hardware. Lots of the really interesting, really early stuff was scrapped or land-filled when it reached the end of it's useful life. Its constantly breaking down in ways that are expensive and/or time consuming to fix. Even if you can find the time and (expensive) parts to fix any of it, the only repair information that exists is in an unarchived manual and the only hard copy belongs to some asshole on eBay who wont scan the pages you need and wants $500 for it. The seller refuses to negotiate on the price even though the listing has been up for over a year. The only people who talk about the hardware are a handful of faggot "vintage computing" YouTubers and even then they only ever talk about the aesthetics of the design. It is utterly impossible to sell it to the three other people alive who would buy any of it off of you as anything other than e-waste because it's too large and fragile to ship reliably.
But we're effectively approaching the point of "don't help anyone unless there's something in it for you" as it is.
That's why all of those Chinese videos of people dying horribly, the ones where nobody reacts to it, exist. People are afraid of scammers (like you see in Russia) and a retarded legal framework where you can get sued by the person you're trying to help (or have the crime pinned on you by the cops).

one little thing that makes bigcorp fume is when you use words without mentioning a company name

"buy it online" instead of "buy it on amazon"
"look it up" instead of "google it"
"edit it" instead of "photoshop it"
they love when their terminology enters regular use, thats actually the biggest advert for these things, think about it, when have you last seen an ad for one of these huge services? the ones that seem to be the 'default' of their respective market... they hardly even put up ads, and when they do, its to announce something new. not saying "hey, were X and heres our service!" but rather "hey, you already knows us here at X, we just came up with something new!"
actually, i think thats how some smaller brands are starting to advertise too, because they feel as if thats how youre meant to do it
I know im quote-replying a month old post but bear with me. This sort of tactic is a double edged sword. Once you over do it and your brand name enters common vocabulary, you may (and you will a some point) loose your trademark. And this is something that the corporations are extremely afraid of, because loosing the trademark is functional death of it, and loss of all the millions of dollars that went into entrenching it in the collective mind.

It's precisely the reason why Coca-Cola is called Coke not "Cola".

It happened a few times in my language, and there is currently a battle where a large delivery corporation is trying to issue official statements for their subcontractors to not decline (=change the form of the word based on it's function in the sentence) the name of their parcel locker machine. That name has become common parlance and the governing body responsible for standardization of the language has started discussion about including that word for any parcel locker machine, because now a few other delivery companies have them. The company's aim is to prevent people from using the parcel locker brand name as a common word, because if it gets into common parlance then they will loose the trademark and every other vendors parcel locker machine will be called like that. Effectively destroying the trademark. Instead they want the subcontractors to use a colocation like "<parcellocker> Parcel Machine" which is one hell of awful corporate language and sounds weird.

I haven't noticed this trend in english but in my language words like "adidas" mean any sport shoes (trainers), "pampers" are any diapers etc. So in my language when you say you got a new pair of adidasy, they might just as well be Nike, Slazenger, Puma or whatever other brand of trainers/sneakers.

For some reason it does not happen in English (and it should), nearly 100 years (1930) after the invention of scotch tape, Scotch is still 3M's brand name. At this point scotch tape should be standardized in dictionaries as a synonym of sticky tape, same with "exacto knife" and a few others.

We have a couple words like that. Zipper, Escalator, Dumpster, Thermos, Granola, and Laundromat come to mind specifically as having been trademarked in the not-too distant past and are now legally generic. Corporations will cling to their trademarks tooth and nail though in English speaking countries.

It happened in the grest depression era too. Entertainment did pretty well during that time. People can't buy real state or have any social mobility but will buy 10$ worth of copium and small dopamine hit in the form of a funko or a videogame. the average american can still cover those type of expenses even on a low wage.
