Thanks, I do think it suits Tony very well, but I stole it from discussions about the recent wave of "AI" that includes ChatGPT. (Honestly I'm amazed that Tony hasn't yet written an article full of entirely fictional citations after asking ChatGPT for "studies that support gender affirming care".)

I don't think that raises much of an ethical issue. My understanding is that experts who are called to testify or provide services to the state are entitled to billable hours that offset the time and cost for their work. There's almost always a back and forth in trials involving expert witness compensation, and it's a question they quickly dispatch by comparing it to the fees they would make in private practice as evidence that the compensation is bare-bones and not really a conflict of interest, as the time sink usually puts them at a loss. $6,000 seems really low to me for a document like this.
Usually the problems arise when the state relies on an expert witness who is billing them for more work than they could conceivably do while maintaining quality, since quantity is the only way to make a profit off government work. It's definitely helpful for experts who wouldn't be raking in money in a private practice and decide to align their careers toward state services that make them reliable stooges.

"Conversion therapy" implies you can convert someone from one thing to another. The reason you can call the anti-gay stuff "conversion therapy" is because the goal is to make them not gay. You can't call anything involving trans people "conversion therapy" because no matter what you do they'll always be the same sex. Sure, the former can fail every time or whatever but it at least has a plausible theoretical goal, the latter has nothing but fantastical wishes about magic.
