Funnily enough, the character's friends are on the prom committee and pick a building that's not wheel chair accessible, even though their friend and the main character is wheel chair bound. I like to believe that this wasn't shitty writing, but in fact her friends just hate her so much that they chose a building she couldn't physically access.

Finally, a game about Conquistadors could be so fascinating. You're a force that's vastly outnumbered, fighting the greatest empire in a land you've never been to before. You're armed with superior weapons, but your main weapon is politicking with the other tribes to lead them to rebel against the Aztecs. You can show nuance, in that the conquistadors despite being a colonial power, were fighting against one of the most psychotic and corrupt empires and religions to have existed. You can explore how the Aztec empire was so horrible, that even European powers at the time thought Cortez was lying because they couldn't believe the savagery.

But of course, any modern story regarding Europeans vs natives of the Americas is just going to be the Noble Savage fighting off the barbarous white man and no more depth or thought is required.

They think that their ideas are in fact better than anything that's come before, often flying squarely in the face of what people actually like. Instead of delicate shaping with hammer and chisel, it's attacking the statue with a sledgehammer. Whether it's something as lazy as a race/gender/sexuality swap or more like a full-on character assassination, they upset and turn away the existing audience while failing to bring any new viewers in, the "modern audience" a myth they keep telling themselves is surely out there. Then they get mad when people don't immediately watch their work and praise their genius.

Really, if they're that upset about being told they need to keep their writing close to existing canon, they should just work on something else entirely. If you come up with something entirely new, you get to control it and take it in the direction you want. But they don't want to do that, they want the instant fame from working on something already noteworthy, trashing everything that came before and updating it for their modern sensibilities. And that's why everything continues to suck.

I used to love reading MadGoblin's history of spider-man characters and comics and stuff. (even more than actually reading the comics themselves) One thing you picked up on is when a new character arose and was beloved - like Hobgoblin or Venom - it's that they challenged the hero in a new and interesting way while still being good stories and respecting what came before. This is certainly where I often clash with Star Wars lovers and haters: SW isn't "limited" or anything like that, it just requires good stories and the prequels weren't that good and the sequels were even worse.

Too many today - and I believe Bob is one of them - seem convinced they don't need editing. That their first draft is the best ever because they're so brilliant. Sorry, but no. I've read even a rough draft of one of the smartest, most experienced, legit authors of our day - and he still had mistakes in it beyond the occasional typo. Everything requires polishing and refinement.
