Do candidates like Christie, Pence, etc. just run because they make money off of it somehow? I know that every politician at a high level is a narcissist to varying degrees, but these people can't be delusional enough to think that they can beat DeSantis, let alone Trump, to win the Republican nomination, right? I can also understand to some degree wanting to be out there to get more name recognition for a future run (like RFK Jr. for the Democrats for instance,) but again I think someone like Christie or Pence would have to be out of their minds to think that's even in the cards for them.

Maybe I'm conspiratarding too hard, but I feel like Pence is only even there so that he can be used as a cudgel against Trump because it looks bad for the latter to have his former VP oppose him and inevitably attack him.

There are good reasons to run for President that have nothing to do with actually wanting the office. For instance, vying for a cabinet position, selling your brand, forwarding your causes. Or shitposting, like Vermin Supreme.

You're definitely right that part of it is building a name for the next run, which is why I think Hillary screwed the democratic bench in 2016 and eventually how we got Biden.
