How many Reddit "blackouts" has there been? I feel like it's almost a yearly occasion. There was the first one in 2015 over Reddit firing whoever the hell Victoria was
That was the original blackout, which was fundamentally different in character from all the ones that followed.

Victoria was a well-loved, but also competent administrator of the AMA sub, who was employed by the company specifically to coordinate with AMA guests and ensure that the process went smoothly. She held a fair amount of influence within reddit as a result, so naturally when Ellen Pao was hired, Victoria was one of the first firings. Can't have competition to the new queen.

As for the protest itself: The subs that went dark said they were going to black out until they either got Victoria back, or Pao resigned. They got the latter, which was apparently good enough for them. The protest over the tranny nonce mod was pretty much strangled in the crib and was used as an excuse to eject the mods of many of those subs, and replace them with reddit-loyal powermods.

Any subsequent blackouts were cargo-cult-level shit, where they performatively declared a blackout, but set a deadline regardless of whether their demands were met, because they couldn't comprehend the idea of actually leaving reddit or giving up the illusion of control that jannying provides. There's also a high chance they were astroturfed to give Reddit an excuse to implement policy changes.

Can we just give these brave subreddits a round of applause for standing up for third party apps :semperfidelis:

Let's also not forget the 34 onlyfans subreddits and 10 feet-related subreddits!

They're a real one for this.

This is quite the moral quandary. On the one hand, Reddit is an archetypal Silicon Valley groupthink commune that silences anyone who dares question "the message". On the other, their opponents are all unemployed trannies that are complaining it's harder to bulk powermod while doing their daily dilations. How can they feel important if they can't ban hundreds of literal-Nazis per hour?

Is there an outcome where both sides lose? Whatever the outcome I hope their IPO tanks.

A bunch of top subs reopened today so the mods could make a virtue-signaling post that would get to r/all and then closed themselves to new posts. They couldn't even go the full 2 days (not to mention this will increase traffic).

They're all copy-paste, here's the one from r/interestingasfuck. They weren't fast enough to stop comments and there's a good mix of people in there who have no idea what this is or don't agree with it, plus the ones in favor. I think this will ultimately go down very badly when the subs reopen.

Total janny death! Maybe that faggot that is running the RLM subreddit will get blasted out.
God, I hope so. Sometimes I go on there to browse, any comment that derides beardfat for being the waste of organs that he is gets instantly deleted... Wait a second, maybe it's Josh himself that's the mod?

If a redditor really wanted to make a mark on history (or at least get your name added to the reddit wikipedia article), you should commit suicide and blame it all on reddit taking away free access to the API. The more redditors that do it, the bigger the chance that the company will reverse their policy. Sanctioned Suicide is only a click away if you need any help.

edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger!

The_Donald lasted for so long because it was an absolute goldmine. They had a bunch of militarised conservatives on their liberal platform and as a result could promote all sorts of dime a dozen anti-woke products to them. Those coffee beans that taste like shit but have a gun on them? Now we have a platform to advertise them to instead of plastering the entire site with fairly safe trash like Huel. Donald users were more likely to not use adblock too so the adverts would actually get to them.

At one point, it was easily the largest active subreddit on the whole platform, and while a shitload of that was likely bot related activity, the sheer amount of user data from Republican leaning users, all confined to a single subreddit made it a very important part of reddit. No wonder they kept it alive on life support up until they kinda had to snuff it.

Mark my words, keeping The_Donald alive wasn't a mistake by the admins, it just felt like it because it was tonally separate from 90% of reddit.

Yeah that's kind of what I was getting at. The admins were willing to throw their principles aside if it meant more money. They've done it before.

The lengths some people will go to to maintain their access to vulnerable kids...

It's not even the most popular trans-friendly space on reddit, or even on the internet. Maybe an indefinite closure will help them fix their brains.

They will never match our kill count though.

I feel like their IPO tanking would be the outcome where both sides lose, no? (Although I don't get investors, how could an IPO be successful after the CEO publicly admits that the site has been in the red for years, all attempts to monetize unsuccessful?) After all, if the site is slowly sinking into obscurity, there's less nahtzees to moderate! Using moderators to segue into what I happened upon, noted Youtube app unfucker Revanced contributors are already working to patch out the need for an app access token for 3rd party apps, enabling them to be used after June 30th.(A) (Revanced Manager also has patches for the official reddit app, doesn't make it less shit but it does disable ads)

Hopefully trannyjannies are tech savvy enough to follow simple instructions. I can't wait for the inevitable cat and mouse game when this gets a bit more widespread, after all, hell hath no fury like a person who hates ads being shown ads.

The Verge reports on the imminent danger reddit employees face... from jannies(?) outdoors??? (archive)
Read the full internal memo from Reddit CEO Steve Huffman below:
Hi Snoos,
Starting last night, about a thousand subreddits have gone private. We do anticipate many of them will come back by Wednesday, as many have said as much. While we knew this was coming, it is a challenge nevertheless and we have our work cut out for us. A number of Snoos have been working around the clock, adapting to infrastructure strains, engaging with communities, and responding to the myriad of issues related to this blackout. Thank you, team.
We have not seen any significant revenue impact so far and we will continue to monitor.
There’s a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we’ve seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would. The only long term solution is improving our product, and in the short term we have a few upcoming critical mod tool launches we need to nail.
While the two biggest third-party apps, Apollo and RIF, along with a couple others, have said they plan to shut down at the end of the month, we are still in conversation with some of the others. And as I mentioned in my post last week, we will exempt accessibility-focused apps and so far have agreements with RedReader and Dystopia.
I am sorry to say this, but please be mindful of wearing Reddit gear in public. Some folks are really upset, and we don’t want you to be the object of their frustrations.
Again, we’ll get through it. Thank you to all of you for helping us do so.
"I am sorry to say this, but please be mindful of wearing Reddit gear in public. Some folks are really upset, and we don’t want you to be the object of their frustrations." being the best part of the quote. I thought Steve was aware that anyone who cares about this would be no threat to anyone even if they somehow managed to stumble outside. Perhaps he's just trying to play up the victim angle for the media, or maybe he's worried that some sneaky doxers will find out more reddit employees are pedos as part of the "protest" and simply wants to preemptively discredit any accusations. Hard to say

Always remember that the bullshit with reddit is primarily the fault of reddit moderators. The only reason reddit has gotten to be a shithole is because the jannies have already established that censoring people for petty political reasons is acceptable on their. These people have no right to complain about reddit.

It's pretty standard these days that the instant you start getting criticized for doing something insanely idiotic, you start screaming about "muh horsemint."
