What the FUCK has happened to Jim Beam? I am trying to drink this shit and it tastes like fucking plastic. There is a terrible chemical/artificial aftertaste that I don't ever remember tasting before. It's truly awful. Did they change something or did I get a bad batch?

Did you happen to catch the coof at some point? I did last August and it fucked up the way a lot of my favorite whiskies tasted, I'm only just now (a year later) tasting most of them the way I remember.

I did catch the coof last year. Could be. Haven't noticed any other problems with the tastebuds. I know it's bottom shelf but it never tasted this awful. Oh, well. I'll just make sours with it to cover the taste. Hate to waste it.

It might have fucked up the way certain things taste. For me, it destroyed pretty much everything except for salt. Coffee (my number one addiction since I quit smoking) tasted like chalk no matter what I did to it. Whiskey and any other spirit was just plain alcohol, most food was absolutely vile (did lose almost 30 lbs though, so silver lining I suppose). One of my co workers who caught it only lost the taste of citrus fruits, everything else tasted normal. It's weird in the different stuff it fucks up. Hopefully you'll get some decent sours out of it anyway.

So anyone in the states ever ordered Cuban rum from Europe? Will customs steal that shit when it comes in to the US? I don't want to piss away 60 bucks and have it stolen by some sheboon at Newark.

Pretty sure you can't send liquor domestically through couriers at all without being a commercial entity with the right licenses. Not that it ever stops people from sending booze in the mail ever. Highly doubt you can import liquor by mail at all as a regular person, embargo nation of origin or not. I'm willing to bet that will get caught right away. As far as I'm aware the only real way you can bring booze into the country would be to bring it physically on your person. You would be required to declare it so I guess you can lie about the type of rum on your next trip to Europe and hope they don't check? That being said I've never done it so I could just be full of bullshit. At the end of the day $60 bucks isn't really a whole lot to gamble on in my mind so go ahead. Is Cuban rum special or something? Can't imagine it would be.

I've ordered various spirits (mostly single malts) through The Whisky Exchange with no issues, but never anything from Cuba. There is no specification as to what's being shipped in the box on the shipping label other than stating that it's alcohol, so maybe it would make it through? I honestly don't know. I've never had any issues with my stuff getting through customs, I'd say try it and see what happens, I'd bet money it'll make it, especially if it's coming from someplace like the Exchange in the UK.

Well rate me wrong on the importation end. I figured with how stupid US laws involving booze are it must be pretty tough to do that by the book but that looks pretty legit. Good to have in mind next time I manage to clear up some shelf space.

Since that site looks like it does things right and probably has all the right loicenses and permits to import and mail booze I would imagine that even if they offer Cuban anything, they probably would respect any US embargos that might exist on such a product. Wouldn't want to risk losing the loicenses.

As for the customs part, are you really sure they never specified anything about your purchases at all on the manifest? Single malt scotch has some crazy high tariff on it. I would expect US customs to want to collect on that.

That is exactly where it's coming from. Nice.

Not that I recall seeing. Maybe it was in the paperwork that I didn't see, but there was nothing on the box specifying what was in it other than alcohol and amounts. Last time I ordered, my bottles were all from different countries (France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Israel, and Australia) but they all had UK tax labels on them. Maybe once the Exchange has them it's considered a product of/from the UK and that's how it's shipped? I'm not entirely sure. Now I sort of want to order a Cuban rum from them and see what happens.

The tariff is on single malt scotch so if it isn't scotch or it's a blend then it wouldn't apply. That being said I've really only ever heard of non-US people having to pay import fees on goods before. I think most imports are duty free so they're probably looking at the dollar value on the manifest and if anything sketchy shows up on an x-ray. Quick Google search is telling me it's $800/day that is duty free. So if you're not splurging on thousand dollars of scotch, and your package is coming from a properly licensed seller, then it'll come through without any extra fees or hassle. Of course it could always end up getting "lost".

Can anyone here even say for sure that Cuban rum is part of US sanctions? Pretty much everyone knows about the cigars being contraband but quite a bit loosened up a while back. If anyone does end up buying some Cuban rum it'd be neat to hear a report back on how the importing went and if there's anything to the rum itself.

I just downed this whole bottle of lord Calvert over the weekend. Is my taste shit?

is Jack Daniel's Apple liquor any good? I'm thinking about either buying a bottle of that or Jim Beam apple.

I'm not able to answer the question you asked since I've never had any of those but I have a strong suspicion that no, they're not any good. Why the interest in apple flavored whiskey? The only use for it I can see is if you want to mix it to coke or something or keep it on hand for women. If you just think it sounds like apple and whiskey is a nice combination, instead maybe try an apple brandy instead (typically called Applejack). It'll at least be more natural and it'll be 40%+ abv.

I have never actually tried this so I'm completely full of shit, but in my general opinion, flavored whiskeys are shit. Why not get applejack aged in bourbon barrels? That's actually good and you can even make Old Fashioneds with it.

I've been drinking a lot of cheap brazilian cachaça lately and it tastes like shit, so I figure whiskey with flavor won't taste like absolute death. As long as it's sweet I'll take it. My main objective is not to reek of alcohol everywhere I go.

That would be vodka, but it's a myth you can drink a bunch of alcohol and not smell of it. It's just vodka doesn't have a distinctive odor, it just smells of alcohol.

What does Vodka taste like, though? Pure unadulterated alcohol?

Pretty much. It's what's called a neutral grain spirit. There are others, like Everclear, that is basically just ethyl alcohol with a tiny amount of water, and plain neutral spirits like soju.

I got gifted a bottle of home-made scotch and i'm surprised at how good it is. Very smooth, slightly peaty, like a luxury version of Ballantine's, though a tad sweeter. Really need to ask about the process of preparation, i'm pretty sure the colour isn't from oak barrels but artificial colouring instead, still tastes like the real deal.

Go the fancy French route and get Calvados.

Store bought flavored whiskey and liquor in general is cancer. DIY infusions are great though. I'm currently infusing some bourbon with cinnamon sticks and local honey for a classy version of Fireball. which i secretly fuckin love because it satisfies my inner 16 year old
