I think Marty is trying a different approach with Bowser, different than how he treats Cyrax. It's like when a rock band tries out a different genre, like jazz or folk, for their new album.

That's been my thoughts about the whole deal as well. Earl overshares a lot, and is extremely timid to boot. So Marty has to be buddy buddy with him in order for him to talk.
