Flaws that are clearly unacceptable result in varying degrees of denial or (if they're stupid) doubling-down.

Nick wants to be stunning/brave/cool in his degeneracy but is a poor judge of what impresses an actual adult who has had meaningful sex. Nick is trying to highlight the aspects that make him sound worldly-wise without the inherent trappings (hence the paraphrasing and omissions). However, these trappings are very apparent to those who know.
