OMORI

I'm honestly surprised they latched onto OMORI given both alluded to relationships are entirely hetero.
Probably has to do with the "Earthbound-like" genre of indie games in general attracting troons.

Also OMORI for some reason is a "relatable" game to them? If you know like, the most basic plot elements of OMORI, you would know that relating to the game in any way is bad and you basically need therapy at that point.

I can imagine finding the whole 'friends who had a falling out and drifted apart' thing relatable. Especially when contrasted against the fictious 'good times' and how it doesn't sugar coat how bad a falling out can get, looking at Sunny's fight with Audrey.

Probably shouldn't relate to the 'manslaughter and purposeful guilt induced loss of identity' stuff, though.

I mean, the theme of feeling like IRL sucks and wanting to stay in a fantasy world of your own creation applies to a ridiculous number of people (many of whom are on the Farms). If people could come away with the message that you need to get out of your bubble and deal with your problems the game would have achieved something worthwhile.

Evangeion did it better.

Like with everything today, the people who obsess over things do it purely for the shallowest reasons possible. Tell them about the message about not alienating themselves from the entire world and they'll answer that their case is justified since others don't share the exact same opinions and worldview.

recently got the game.. enjoyed it better than undertale. Felt the game tackled mature theme better and the graphic is more consistent and competent.
Wasn't really bothered by the lenght of the game, I'm mostly used to console rpg like paper mario and each chapter are far longer..
But yeah I understand how it can get a hassle especially the two route aren't really different unless at the end of the game. Or you accidently locked yourself from a part of the game ( the secret libray can only be acveded via sweetheart castle but if you have made te deal with the keeper screw you.. you can't acess it anymore)

So due to inability to sleep I read this whole thread. I've been watching a lets play but honestly I got bored and then watched the Nitro Rad review instead.

I may be speaking out of my ass, but Omori looks absolutely boring. The areas are uninteresting and the combat system has a problem I recall describing elsewhere where it tries to add depth but in reality its just another thing you need to remember to do in between picking "fight" each round. It's not quite Chrono Cross autistic but still, it gives me the vibes of being more effort than its worth to fuck with all the emotions.

So I have my own little problem with the dream world:

It is so GENERIC.

I hate it when media does this. I know they can't make direct references to real media (though one wonders why they can't make obvious stand-ins... like call it "Teenage Samurai Slugs" instead of "Teenage Ninja Turtles") but the idealized childhood of the dream world is like the TV Tropes version of happy memories, full of just the most abstract and generic concepts. Here's a picnic. Here's some bunnies. Here's a bear. Here's a dragon that kinda looks like the Lollipop Dragon although I'm sure that's a coincidence because that would require Omocat to know about something that isn't anime.... and the only media we ever hear about is a comic book (yay, the Codename Kids Next Door thing of kids in the 1990s reading comics) called "Space Boyfriend" and there's a magical girl called Junko Enoshima "Sweetheart."

Why not, at the very least, call him "Flash Ramsay" and call Sweetheart..... I dunno.... "Demashita! Flower Fluff Girl Z!" or something? That would, at the very least, sound like it wasn't a complete afterthought.

And I hate the Wizard of Oz thing where aspects of the dream world have a 1:1 correlation to things in real life, like Sweetheart being the candy store girl.

Mostly I think I would just agree with existing complaints though. I've mentioned in the past I hate "horror game where the big twist is main character did A Bad Thing" before, but part of the problem here is that the game makes it incredibly obvious that's what's going on early on, and so the rest of the game is just you waiting for the game to stop being coy and come out and say it. As others have said, its maybe a one-hour story that is for some reason taking twenty.

And "game about depression" just isn't an interesting angle in the first place. Sorry Nitro Rad, but a problem is.... a character with emotional issues can be interesting if they're part of a larger story, but if that IS the story, then you might as well be reading some teenage girl's blog. If Evangelion was literally just Shinji being a whiner, nobody would like it. It's that he's a whiner being forced into events that will continue to exist no matter what he thinks or feels that make that series work. Omori is literally just navel-gazing.

I went into this game not knowing anything about the creator, just knowing that there was a new quirky RPG game out with cutesy art and horror elements and personally I thought it was fine. I don't really know what depression is supposed to be like but I think it works as a game about a kid who refuses to face reality and instead wallows in childish escapist fantasies. That's actually very relevant to this day and age if you think about all the childish lolcow coomers and people of gender on twitter and tiktok who are pretty much doing the same thing. The horror elements could get tryhard here and there and I agree that the final twist was unnecessary and actually brought about some plot holes on top of the other weird plot elements with the timeskip. I liked the art and music, the character writing wasn't too deep but it generally felt close enough to that earthbound style quirkiness it was going for and it made me strangely nostalgic about my own childhood too sometimes.

As a sidenote I haven't dug that deep into it but on the surface I get the impression that this fanbase resembles the undertale fanbase to some extent. I can appreciate seeing people getting creative by making their own fan animations and art projects like Faraway logs but I also suspect that it's infested with genderspecials so I'm sure there's a horde of unstable they/them teenage girls with Basil profile pics on twitter sending death threats to others for being "problematic".

Omori is a lovely game. I mean its got cute characters and the undertale fandom is going to devour it. Its fine. The game is meant to be cute and it employs character-driven humor effectively.

I enjoyed how its mostly grounded. There are no trannies or nonbinaries. You're not in an interracial marriage with a black skeleton. Its kids in a suburb and the plot is fundamentally about how childhood friendships fade and change. Its a boring old suburb with a pizza shop, a comic book shop, shitty teenaged part time jobs, and playground bullies.

It reflects the experience of normal humans.

Once again, having trouble sleeping (why does that bring me back to this thread?) but I had a thought.

Tell me if you guys think this is a fair statement:

Omori is basically just Scott Pilgrim... but shit.

(or more shit, if you're the kind of person who hates Scott Pilgrim for whatever reason).

It just occurs to me the two seem to cover similar themes and ideas, but Scott Pilgrim is written by someone who has actually met another human being before.

This is fully correct. This is the OMORI Discord icon as we speak:

They are particularly into the idea of Sunny and Basil, if memory serves. So you got it in one.

Omori creator Omocat is being made to do an apology tour again for being a kawaii sussy baka a decade ago (non-stop joking about cp)

This was started when she purged some of her old tweets joking about child abduction and shotacon

What's noticeable from her "apology" statement is that she never explicitly confesses to these things being wrong (in fact does not mention child jokes at all), just excusing herself from blame for being terminally online girl (UwU) and that being irreflective of her character today. This is probably because she knowingly tried to make a profit off being sussy with Shotacon merch

This pretty much erases any doubt in my mind that she was just "cringe". She went through the entire business process to sell merchandise with an exact form of drawn child pornography right on the front for pedo trannies that she undoubtedly corresponded with. Probably would not want to buy from her until she actually confronts what she has done, instead of declaring that she is "above it"

Listen. She made a thing we like. She's changed. It was 10 years ago when it was OK to be a paedophile.

Okay yeah, pretty sussy baka all things considered, but it probably would've been best if she just took the Tyler Tweet route and just shut the fuck up about it and let it blow over. Is it weird as fuck to tweet and make merch with a jap word used for "boy hentai"? Yeah, but unless she has some more skeletons in her closet or she does something far worse in the near future, it's not overly bad for right now.
