In any other economic system, something like this would be totally reserved for upper-class (or “party members” like cars in the Soviet Union)and would basically be a signifier of gentry
Nah, a thing that allows you to spy on the entire populace and feed them information constantly would not be reserved to upper-class. Same as with Radio and TV. It lets masses hear, and then see Dear Leader instantly.
Fifth: delete utms from your links. It won't let some dude dox your ass just by itself, but still is a factor in your internet privacy.

So far as I can tell, not only won't it make them money, but people forced to use their absolutely shit-tier official client just won't, except the most worthless of redditors, i.e. the very people who make it impossible to get advertisers and will scare off any IPO with their up front depraved perversions, pedophilia, and other vile behavior, while the third party app makers will just shut down.
I also think it's very likely that it won't make them any money. But it's a money pit as is, and if this is the best they can come up with, it's better than just pulling the plug and calling it quits. For me, the fact that there's no inkling of anyone making money now or in the future makes the IPO dead in the water before anyone even looks at perverts and pedos.

I would imagine the idea as a pitch can work on investors, because you can show the profits 3rd party apps made as real numbers, showing there's value there. A good salesman can sell that idea. At least for a little while to keep (some) investors interested, until they realize it doesn't work because reddit can't make an app, and it all dies anyway.

Main thing for me is people need to start treating these businesses like Twitch and reddit as already dead, because they are. The bubbles of future profit in their models have burst and they now have to produce a business case that actually works, like grownups. If they can't, it's better to let it die off than keep a money pit going.

Case in point, fuckin China right now. Many people have a smartphone, and then you need your real name to register for websites n shit

reddit probably is dying, but twitch technically has amazon to prop it up artifically.
they have a giant platform and a huge worldwide commerce presence.
also being able to control the public discourse like they do with twitch is too useful beyond the money it makes.
same with youtube, if they can change society by dictating what is and isn't allowed to suit their needs, that has more money potential than any money youtube could make on it's own.
now youtube and google got greedy, with the unskippable double ads and locking behind previously available features, but it is what it is.

edit: youtube is even starting to purge content. i think they plan to delete youtube channels that havent been active for years. to be fair though, hosting like a trillion vidoes in storage gets cumbersome.

Apologies if going too off topic from reddit, but considering Twitch is pulling itself apart trying to make money, in a similar dynamic and outrage to what's happening on reddit, I'm pretty sure there's pressure from Amazon for it to stop fucking around and make money. Amazon fired something like 25k people recently, it's not like they just want to throw away money if it doesn't help them.

Total viewership on Twitch is in the range of 1-4 million, which is of the order of a single large television channel. More importantly, in terms of eyes on ads (or other content you want them to see), it's basically non existent, because streamers don't run any ads, and actively shit on Twitch/Amazon and whatever it tries to do all day long. Streamers are not business partners, they are modern cult leaders in every sense of the word, Amazon gets very little (or no) influence over their followers.

Not even mentioning the eventual shitstorm when the mainstream finally realizes kids and the mentally ill are destroying their lives giving 1000s of dollars to strangers who pretend to be their friend, and there's a platform specifically built around exploiting it. When gambling sites and Onlyfans have more protections in place than your horribly abusive platform, you're not doing well.

The /r/mildlyinteresting mods are back, but they're not super happy about it;

Dear mildlyinterested reader,
We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your patience and unwavering support during the recent turbulence in our community. Our subreddit is a labour of love, and we've weathered this storm together.
Recent events have been confusing for all of us, from the vote, sudden removal of moderators, to conflicting messages from Reddit. As your mod team, we feel it's essential to clarify the situation.
On June 19, the poll results favoured partially reopening with changes. However, before implementing these changes, Reddit took sweeping actions, removing all 27 moderator accounts without warning. This left us baffled and concerned.

Here's a brief timeline of the events:
  1. On June 19, the poll results favoured partially reopening with changes. We announced the vote results and planned changes to the sub, including marking it as NSFW due to the common posts of phallic objects (no explicit content allowed). CLICK HERE TO VIEW THAT ANNOUNCEMENT WHICH HAS BEEN APPROVED AND LOCKED FOR POSTERITY.
  2. A tug-of-war between the u/ModeratorCodeOfConduct account and the remaining moderators ensued, with the post repeatedly being removed and reinstated. Each mod involved was immediately locked out of Reddit. Subreddit settings were also unilaterally changed by the admin account.
  3. Eventually, all moderators were removed and suspended for 7 days, with the vote results deleted and the community set to “archived.”
  4. A lot of public outrage ensued, with details posted on r/ModCoord about what happened. At that point, no other subreddit had been targeted yet, leaving the situation uniquely unclear.
  5. Admin cited actions as an "error" and promised to work with us to solve the situation. For /r/mildlyinteresting posterity, this will henceforth be referred to as The Mistake™.
  6. All our accounts were unsuspended and reinstated, but only with very limited permissions (modmail access only). For what it's worth, 'time moderated' for every moderator was reset (e.g. /u/RedSquaree moderated since 11 years ago, reset: currently showing moderated since "1 day ago").
  7. The awaited discussion never happened. Instead, the admins presented us with an ultimatum: reopen the subreddit and do not mark it as NSFW, or face potential removal again. The inconsistent and arbitrary application of Reddit's policies reveals a possible conflict of interest in maximizing ad revenue at the risk of user safety and community integrity.
  8. Finally, our moderation permissions were restored after we "promised" to comply with their conditions, but we kept the subreddit restricted while we ponder our next steps..
Problems remain unresolved, and Reddit's approach to policies and communication have been troubling. We believe open communication and partnership between Reddit and its moderators are crucial for the platform's success.
As a team, we remain dedicated to protesting Reddit's careless policy changes. Removing ourselves or vandalizing the subreddit won’t achieve our goals, but rather hinder our community. We're here to ensure r/mildlyinteresting isn't left unattended.
We call for the establishment of clear, structured, and reliable communication channels between Reddit admins and moderation teams. Teams should be informed and consulted on decisions affecting their communities to maintain trust and integrity on the platform. We shared this request with the Admin who promised to work with us, so far they have ignored it.
Us mods are still deciding how exactly to reopen, not that we have been given much choice.
Sincerely,
The r/mildlyinteresting mods
They're pointing to a "conflict of interest" between "maximising ad revenue" and "user safety and community integrity". Unsurprisingly yes there is a conflict of interest between "let's spam our subreddit with porn to fuck reddit's ad revenue" and the continued operation of reddit, and they're being treated accordingly (I have no idea where "user safety" comes in).
Who could have guessed that the admins would flat out say "If you don't reopen the subreddit or reopen the subreddit and make it NSFW, you'll be removed as mods"?

This poor loyal power janny got heckin order 66'd guys. How unwholesome of spez. The first janny to swallow the shotgun barrel coming soon?
redditmod.jpg

the guy has been pissing and shitting himself for the past few days, unable to cope with the fact he's no longer able to exercise that one single modicum of power that he's lorded over regular users for the past few years. dude cannot even control his frantic ham mittens from typing out a coherent sentence since he's so fucking freaked out.

spez should probably unsuspend him though, awkwardtheturtle is more than willing to become a good servile janny and clean it up and inhale corpo boot as long as it grants him the power he utterly desires, same deal with that other powerjanny Merari whose inconspicuously VERY silent during all this (probably afraid his account gets taken away again as well if any of his subs go NSFW/private), none of these lame goobers have any actual convictions about the API changes.

as usual, TJD.

When you click on a comment with the Reddit Enhancement Suite extension installed, it numbers every link in the comment in square brackets after the link. There's also no asterisk after the timestamp, which means that the comment wasn't edited. RES is definitely installed because the selected comment is blue and there is a save-RES link below the comment.
Thanks! Guess I was the moron in this case.
It went from only talking about guns and gun control to people unironically talking about ousting "racists" from the community.
Every subreddit is doing that nowadays.
>break the rules by abusing your power as mod
>get revoked

I think I can guess Reddit's next step

On other news, /r/videos changed their rules again:

In their own words, "there just aren't that many fun videos of [John Oliver] out there it turns out", so that rule is gone too

They did this for putting the wrong pixels on the reddit /r/place thing. Die on your knees, NFT consoomer.
Holy goddamn fuck! I already laugh at the idiots who spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on DLC and mobile games that can be arbitrarily shut down with nothing to show for it. And I laugh even more at the NFT idiots, who will spend retarded amounts of money on a picture from the internet that anyone can see and copy. "But you don't understand, I *TOTALLY* own the rights to it, bro!" But people are actually fucking stupid enough to spend money on fake "digital avatars" from pReddit, that serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever, and can be "lost" forever if some tranny gets butthurt and bans your account?! Literally El-Oh-Fucking-El! 🤣 At least, while completely retarded, mobile games can provide some entertainment, and an NFT could in theory, be "sold" to an even more retarded faggot for money. But what sort of ANY purpose does a pReddit "digital avatar" have?! And this exceptional faggot spent over $5k on them?!
  • They're incredibly unwilling to move over to a new site, the reddit alternate shilling that has been going on with privated subreddits usually fails or forms a miniscule splinter community that slowly dissolves back to reddit.
Redditors are bound to their corner of the net, and the only thing that could possibly change that and produce a keter level reddit swarm is the entire site shutting down.
They'll cite digg as proof that they can migrate to a new service, but the amount of digg users on reddit has diminished over the years and the Internet is no longer the same beast it was back in the days of digg.

I would argue they're largely like that because they have been curated to select for it. If it weren't for the powertripping jannies deleting all wrongthink then it might be somewhat tolerable. Anyone who doesn't drink the troonshine will find every comment they make gets deleted and will just stop taking part pretty quickly.

Every subreddit past a certain size inevitably attracts the tranny powermods and becomes a room-temp IQ echo chamber. I 100% blame them for what the site became and I am relishing the schadenfreude of the janny scum getting a reality check on who is really in charge of the site.
Agree with you both. Aggregated and homogenized collectives are horrible for the internet, and communities in general. The initial premise of Reddit was great, where people could come together under a single umbrella, yet have their own niche communities to mingle in. It's when the vast admin overreach and Powerjannies crept in is when it went to shit. As others have said, a return to niche smaller forums is the best solution. I never had a problem with them before., and would rather deal with a close-knit forum with ~200 members than pReddit with 10 million pedophile faggots with fragile egos.
If you leave a subreddit without and Skynet levels of censorship for more than a few minutes organic users actually start shitting on trannies, making edgy jokes, sharing forbidden statistics on sensitive topics and calling mods faggots and all those would get organically upvoted too
Bold of you to assume that pReddit doesn't or won't soon have an overreaching automoderator that will screen every sub for no-no words and crack down on "wrongthink" and Hatespeech™️, especially if the year-long IPO attempt actually goes through
I believe Chicago and some other city subs did this months ago (maybe Minneapolis?). Remember to keep your eyes wide shut, peons.
Oh cmon, it's obviously racist to point out the weekly niggerpocalypse, future engineer on future engineer violence, consequences of white supremacy!

Bold of you to assume t
I don't. I even said before on this thread that the AI jannies will be much worse than the real ones and the AI will be programmed by trannies too so there's no escape. But the reason reddit needs such a heavy handed moderation in the first place is because its because if it didn't its own userbase would get very spicy very quick, the average thread on reddit has like half the comments removed, only the most braindead morons are allowed to post unquestioned.

@Harbinger of Kali Yuga, You're u/freespeechwarrior, aren't you?

Yep, confirmed. Your autism is impossible to hide. You're still assmad that even after you sucked up to the admins that they shut down your subreddit even when we told you this would happen. You still post like a redditor and a faggot.
A quick thumb through of that users post history would just about confirm it. The same style of posts, lengthy, wordy, proto-anarchist/libertarian views. And the history of being a janny who got butthurt over admins booting him from his subs. I fucking knew it! 🤣
You know I can't play this guessing game. I will say I do not post on reddit and fighting this shit on the platform at this stage is autistic and a waste of time. I'd like to see reddit completely fall apart and if a non-propaganda service cannot exist I'd like to see nothing take its place and let people be forced to either make weird obscure forums again or hang out in real life again. Every moderator on reddit could be a decent guy and the admins would still force them to mod the woke shit. Besides, none of the people running reddit deserve any success in life whatsoever and I'm rooting for personal failure for spez.
Dude, no harm in admitting that you're butthurt over history at pReddit. We all laught at and hate them, you obviously take it personally. Your style all but gives it away. I still don't see why you even care, apparently years later, what the pReddit Tranny-jannies think of what and where you say/post. Nobody here is gonna send  the evil hacker 4chan after you doxxx you.

For those of you who have no clue who we're talking about /u/freespeechwarrior was a mod for r/WatchRedditDie or some other anti-censorship subreddit that sold out to the admins in order to keep his subreddits open. Everyone in those subreddits told him he was a retarded faggot for doing so but he trusted the admins and then got assblasted out of his mod position and eventually joined the Farms. This is why Harbinger of the Kali Yuga, aka freespeechwarrior, posts so many autistic screeds about how evil the admins of Reddit are.

Seriously dude, this shit happened like 5 years ago, let it fucking go and stop being an autistic faggot on yet another message board.
