This isn't academic research and no credible academic researcher (or person with an above average IQ) would bother trying to "cut through the noise" on Twitter "during intense news period" with a dumb ass API tool. The only academic research purpose for studying this would be to simply log everything, they wouldn't want to "cut through the noise" as that's bad scientific practice.

He doesn't realize that anyone with a twitter account could sign up for API access. The only difference between the average man on the street vs the academic access was the amount of tweets the endpoint would return and possibly a rate limit over a set amount of time. You're not special Big Al, everyone who was not paying lost access to the API the other day. We all know how lax he is when it comes to researching topics or being inquisitive, so it doesn't surprise me that he hasn't caught on that snscrape still functions by using workarounds. For someone who hates KF and wants to larp as an academic, surely he would have come across that particular software being mentioned in the following paper from two months ago:
