I gave Far Cry 2 a try during downtime and got around 30% of it done before dropping it. Yes it has cool and unique concepts like weapon jamming and malaria pills but GODDAMN I JUST WANT TO DRIVE TO A LOCATION AND NOT FIGHT 5 ROADBLOCKS OF GUARDS.
It's war torn Africa, what did you expect? It ain't no vacation in the Himalayas.

I'm replaying the series (the ones I really like at least) in no particular order, starting with 3 of course. I'm playing the steam version for the first time and honestly the weird PC port issues are just adding to the fun chaotic nature I like about these games, I kill a tiger and get run up on, then mid gunfight the tiger revives right behind me and fucking owns me. Great stuff. Though, toggle aim down sights is hard for me to get used too.

My caveman died and I really regret having chosen Second Chance mode now because I have no idea how I'm going to get the replacement.

Permadeath in a roguelike isn't a great idea seeing as you force the player to replay very long stretches of the same material, and in these narrative games they'll just spring big unavoidable dangers on you with no warning, no way to react. I and my started wolf got eaten by cave lions.

The straw that broke the camel's back was I had a buddy mission to do during a main mission and the safehouse he was at was right by a massive roadblock camp. I had to clear it, talk to the buddy, clear it again, go get whatever the fuck he needed, go clear it again to give him something, clear it a 4th time to go to the actual mission. And 221 diamonds witch most are worth 1? Fuck that.

Far Cry 2 is like the poster child for cool ideas with the most god awful execution and like no thought to the actual design.

I remember that thing where the hideouts are so close to the checkpoints being a thing that regularly annoyed me in the game. I can deal with quick respawn check points but holy fuck don't put them so close to hideouts and stuff.

Far Cry Primal turns out to be really, really good. I don't know if it can hold up in the long run, but it's something really fresh and just different. I think in some ways it uses Far Cry's world design better than any of the other normal shooter games do. What exactly is Far Cry from 3 onwards (I'm not familiar with the first two)? How would you pitch it in a sentence? To me, it would be "going commando in an exotic location fighting man and nature with extreme sports elements." Primal doesn't have the sporty aspect, the wingsuits and parachutes and crap like that, but the premise of being a caveman wandering around the wilderness fighting animals constantly and genociding every Neanderthal you see marries gameplay and theming perfectly.

The resource system is really simple, but it does its job remarkably well. Stuff is always breaking, and it breaks at just the right rate that you can sometimes run out at crucial times and sometimes get a glut, but it's always present as a concern. Need for meat as a basis for all consumables works well for keeping you unga-bungaing. Survivor Mode animals dying works well, animals are just another resource, one dies go find another, ration them.

And the world may have looked like Kyrat from top-down, but the reviews are right, it feels totally different, and is a wonderful bizarre jumble of steep slopes and cliffs and valleys - I think it's probably supposed to be like an area scraped out by a glacier - that feels even bigger because of how you are easily lead to loop back on yourself. Has some stunning views, the Ice Age area is wonderfully bleak and hostile (helped by the heat mechanic, it's punishing) and there's this amazing thing where to get into another region you have to climb a cliff, go through some deep long tunnels, and then finally come out on the other side of the mountain at the top of another cliff. Just fantastic scenery not just from an aesthetic standpoint, but also as gameplay experience. Makes Far Cry 5's map even shittier by comparison.

Only thing I don't like is the mammoths feel clunky and useless compared to Far Cry 4 elephants. But in general, really, really good game.

Everyone who didn't play Primal really missed out. I finished it today, with the permadeath bullshit I had to spend a ton of time just preparing for the two boss fights (kill the Neanderthal leader/kill the Neolithic leader) by unlocking everything, felt like preparing for D-Day. The atmosphere and worldbuilding were 10/10 (despite being minimalist), the core gameplay loop was great. Really unique game.

I wish Primal had been its own series - all of this stuff could just as easily be translated to a Mesoamerican "Apocalypto" setting, or American Indian setting, Polynesian setting, etc., it could have been milked as hard as AC - but it got overlooked in its time. Real shame.

It's such a shame. The whole 1960's Cuban aesthetic is a cool environment to fuck around in to me. I could ignore the stupid trans and feminist characters and just focus on the environment, but they had to go and completely fuck up the gameplay with all the RPG bullshit.

Fuck Reddit for praising that shit. Fuck them straight to hell.
Yeah, they really squandered what should have been a cool setting.

I think that what Far Cry 6 should have done was have the setting draw inspiration more explicitly from Batista by having it revolve around the intersection of Mafia, the state, and the revolutionaries and have characters and content and theming about the fall of Not-Havana and the end of that decadent golden age.

But I'm also hoping there will one day be a Mafia game set in Havana. Since Mafia 4 is going to be in Sicily (like some scenes of the Godfather), maybe a Mafia 5 could.

Did the Mafia games ever referenced Sopranos by any chance?

That's all of it.
i mean you can always play melee fucking around.
but they fixed many of the fun factor that FC5 had, FC6 is a clear upgrade from new dawn which is utter shit using mobile tier trash and having awful characters and setting.

Far Cry 6 had amazing potential but fucks it in almost every way. Honestly, Cuban revolution with Rambo style hunting and combat would be brilliant, but I have no idea how they made almost everything a direct step downward in quality from 4 and 5.

Not having a full kit of abilities at any one time makes the progression feel like absolute ass. I never thought I'd want a skill tree in a game ever again but 6 shows how important it really was to the feel of 3 onward. You go from a fairly vulnerable guy to a walking death machine capable of murdering every person in your path.

Aesthetically the game is just terrible. So ugly, I hate the post apocalyptic Junko fetish plaguing the whole game. Fucking water bottle gas masks and nail guns, get out of here.

The RPG shit doesn't even really hurt the combat much but it does make getting materials and items for your gear an absolute fucking slog. Money used to be the major resource you needed for new guns but that's gone now for the most part so your incentive to hunt animals is completely gone. I picked up a playthrough last week and realized I'd gone six hours without killing a single animal and that felt way off for a Far Cry game post 2.

The writing is dreadful, it has the AC Odyssey problem of not taking itself seriously at all and having a retarded tone all the way through, on top of constantly pandering to fags and trannies. Danni is an okay protagonist but playing 5 now I genuinely miss when the protagonists of these games would shut the fuck up, I'm sick of modern gaming having the protagonist say shit out loud so that the braindead zoomies know what to do at every opportunity.

Enter a restricted area, "Better keep my head down..."

Yeah no fucking shit. As if the big RESTRICTED AREA sign on the screen wasn't enough.

At least the ending isn't as dogshit awful as 5's pretentious 'dude u wer bad goy all along!'

That's the ending of every Far Cry since 2. Including 6.

For some reason Far Cry 6 seems to celebrate it though. It's weird after how fucking much they seemed to do the opposite, but I guess when you make everyone on your team feminists, troons and communists you have to celebrate it.
