Interesting times in frogland. While I'm not a huge fan of the French overall, this seems to me like a situation where they demanded the chickens come home to roost, and are now realizing that the chickens are mutant, marginally intelligent savage aliens like some 90's kids cartoon from the US. I hope that some people see that this is the price of emotionally driven altruistic political hubris. Sadly, I don't think there will be enough. Here in the US you have a slightly similar situation in the case of the porous southern border, but it's nothing like what Europe has, given the longer history and mostly shorter, if not less dangerous routes the economic migrants supported by NGO's take.
When I heard about that migrant boat capsizing and killing hundreds in the med, I was saddened, not for the same reason the political would be, but for the simple fact that every life lost there could be vastly more helpful in turning the country they left around, if the will was there, instead of fleeing to the "west" to wind up sitting around an ethnic ghetto, turning to a life of crime out of desperation or personal impetus, and being exploited as an underclass by what the "west" has become. I cared more about them than I did the story du jour of the Titanic gravesite tourists who huffed their own farts enough to think a carbon fiber tube was a good thing to use for a deep submergence pressure hull.
Now, some will say that if western nations weren't exploiting the fuck out of these nations to begin with, they would have a better chance of coming close to parity with more developed nations, or groups of nations, sort of like what the ANC tries to do. This is ignoring history in subservience to political ideals. Most of Africa was basically undeveloped before colonialism, and even after it is still nowhere near parity, even if many nations there have made huge progress, and not only to western standards. There are still millions of people in Africa too ignorant to realize how poor they are, and they don't care. There are many people there just simply trying to pursue a happy life, and no one should assume they are wrong because of the way they go about that or try to force their ideals on them. If M'butu wants to chase down a wildebeest with a pointy stick to bring honor on his ancestors and provide for his family, good on him, Nestle doesn't need to sweep in and make a commercial about it for a chocolate bar for woke idiots in Portland or (insert condescending liberal city here) to crow about it on social media for how virtuous they are simply for watching it and hypocritically embracing. /hyperbole
There's a lot of damage that can be mitigated, and a lot of lessons to be learned here. The current political climate as usual, is such that the lessons learned will be bunkered for political and saving face reasons until they corrode and it all happens again with a palette swap and a worse soundtrack. Simply put, importing a bunch of people, especially young men who have nothing culturally in common with your own, is a recipe for disaster. Especially if you are being totally disingenuous with your own people in the reasons for why you are bringing them in in the first place.
