SAG-AFTRA Contract Talks Fail To Reach Deal; National Board Meeting Thursday Morning To Launch Strike; Sides Issue Statements

deadline / https://archive.ph/sfiIi

UPDATED with AMPTP statement, 1:07 AM: Contract negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP broke off tonight, and the guild’s national board will meet Thursday morning to formally approve the launch of a strike.

It will be the first actors strike against the film and television industry since 1980 and the first time that actors and writers have been on strike at the same time since 1960, when Ronald Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild. Picketing is set to begin Friday morning.

NetFlix et al might be okay letting the writers cope and seethe, but I'm not so sure they're willing to do it for the on-screen talent. If for no other reason than that nothing will get promoted, no red carpet premieres, etc. One can hope, though. One can hope.

STOP! EVERYBODY STOP! THE COST OF THIS WAR HAS GOTTEN TOO HIGH! IF I ONLY HAD KNOWN...*sniff* I'm going to be without Gladiator 2, a sequel to the 2000 movie Gladiator about the kid from Gladiator being all growed up now...HOW WILL I FUCKING CLAP IF I DON'T FUCKING SEE IT?!?!

I wasn't even aware that there were even talks about making a sequel to Gladiator, a movie that at the time of this writing is 23 years old. I didn't even bother to look up what the hell Mortal Kombat 2 was about because I wasn't even aware they did a reboot of the Mortal Kombat movie. I found this on accident while looking up what happened at midnight last night which I guess amounted to a giant fuck all. Good. Get starved, nerds

I assume they'll start negotiating with the actors again very quickly, they need them to do promo for the stuff that's already been filmed/scripted. The last one in 1980 lasted for over 3 months but that was when SAG-AFTRA were separate.

The writers are going to be waiting for a while - a few of their demands would actually end up hurting them in the long run as the streamers lose money. I saw this on Twitter and it sums it up:

hilariously poetic that the only thing we'll be missing out on from more strikes is more utterly dogshit content
It isn't even remotely good stuff, it's just the audio-visual equivalent of shovelware that nobody ever wanted in the first place
Only the worst writers and actors are dumb enough to think that their stuff is worth striking over, incredible

My opinion is that people should support this strike:
1. As much as they are upper class, they are still human and their requests are understandable.
2. Anything that damages the stranglehold of Disney et al. will likely lead to a revitalization of the industry and a perhaps a heal in societal discourse. Remember, writers are a self-sustaining system, they spring from a cultural discourse that is currently dominated. Who dominates the discourse? Why the corps, of course.

You don't have to love them or forget that they hate them. If they manage to make any sort of dent in the industry, then it'll be beneficial for everyone.

Gladiator 2 has been kicked around for a while. It's a ridiculously awesome clownshow of a plot that everybody was onboard to do, but for whatever reason it never got off the ground. It's literally the plot of god of war, Russal crow comes back to life, kills all the gods and the end script scene is him working at the pentagon. Yeah, it was based.

Mortal kombat 2 being effected is a shame, but I cant believe they wouldn't be able to find someone off the street to finish it. It's not that complex a plot.

Could care less about anything else. Aliens was supposed to be some diverse mess if im not mistaken.

counterpoint: I refuse to support the work of entitled snobs who are paid too much for what they put out in the first place, and would rather support neither side and watch them both burn than pick one and lose either way

That is also acceptable. However, how do you determine the worth of their work?

I watch a trailer or two, read the summary, browse user reviews and peruse the cast. Looking through the director's/main characters' histories in the industry isn't out of the question either. Social media profiles used to be part of the process until I realized that every single actor has the same dumbass thoughts and opinions that make almost no logical sense and gave up.

You misunderstood. If they have successfully produced goyslop that made a lot of money, why shouldn't they get more money for their work? Aren't they literally fulfilling their KPIs this way?

If they have successfully produced goyslop that made a lot of money, why shouldn't they get more money for their work?
Because it's still goyslop with no artistic or entertainment value that only made money because everyone hated it

Making something like that is only getting the job done in the most barebones and literal sense- that being, they made a product and it made some kind of money

It didn't earn them prestige, it didn't contribute to the company outside of making that profit (unless you count tarnishing their reputation), and it certainly didn't contribute to culture or progress in any significant manner

The only positive thing they brought to the world upon their product existing was a bit more cash for the company, and frankly I deem that a failure to "do their job" properly (especially seeing as the job involves making art not a timewaster)

I know that my stance makes no business sense, but I do not care

I am also aware that my standards are very high and that they are built on an overly-optimistic and naïve view of the industry, but I do not care

I simply want to watch these companies and their workers burn to the ground so that there's even the slightest chance that something better will take their place because as of now they provide nothing of worth and everything they make is a detriment to society at its most significant and bloated slop at its best

So the lesson I take from this is that anime stocks are going to double as normies now starved for "entertainment" now look outside America
If anything, for me, it’s the opposite.

When you see all of these aging actors/actresses that are multi millionaires pretending to care for low wage screen writers who have been stuck doing the same crime show/sitcom/daily talk shows with performative activism that will only make said multi millionaire actors look good with their image, it’s just proof that New Age Hollywood knows that they are irrelevant and people will just rewatch or torrent old shows and movies from the Golden Age to the last few decades.

This “strike” is just an excuse to not have to worry about how the elites and leaders of modern American entertainment does not care for their own fans and/or viewers of them.

Well they're putting it 19 years or so after the original film as well, the casting lists Emperor Caracalla and Emperor Geta so the time period it takes place is somewhere between 209, when Geta gets proclaimed and December 211 which is when Geta gets killed. God knows what the hell kind of plot they'll be doing, at least Spartacus realized it was just high production shlock and made a spectacle out of the gladiator stuff.

>Gladiator 2

What the fucking fuck? Who thought this was a good idea?

Also,

>Alien TV series

For Christ's sake, even Ridley Scott himself has demonstrated that he isn't able to do anything new or interesting with the Alien franchise. Let it rest in peace.
