Barbie - A More Successful Movie than You'd Think

Barbie movie gets Vietnam ban over South China Sea map

Vietnam has banned the upcoming Barbie film over a scene featuring a map depicting contested Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Vietnam is among a number of countries that contest China's claim to almost all of the South China Sea.
The film about the famous doll, which has already taken over social media, is due to release in cinemas on 21 July.
It is unclear which scene depicts what a senior official called the "offensive image" of China's nine-dash line.
The nine-dash line is used in Chinese maps of the South China Sea to show its territorial claims.
Beijing has been building military bases on artificial islands in the area for years and also often conducts naval patrols there in a bid to assert its territorial claims.
In 2016 an international tribunal in The Hague ruled against Chinese claims in the South China Sea, but Beijing did not recognise the judgement.
Film studio Warner Bros' Barbie is not the only production to be banned by Vietnam for featuring the nine-dash line.
In 2019, the DreamWorks animated film Abominable was pulled for the same reason. Three years later, the Sony action movie Uncharted also fell foul of the Department of Cinema, a government body in charge of licensing and censoring foreign films.
Two years ago, Australian spy drama Pine Gap was removed from the Vietnamese market by Netflix, following a complaint from authorities.
China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims in the South China Sea.

damn this movie is gonna go hard into geopolitics

Simu Liu also just called himself the "Kenergizer Bunny". It's as cringe as you'd imagine [A]. He's getting easily trolled for this because he's purely cringe & uncool in general.

For those who don't know, he's trying to copy Ryan's "Kenough" here. But Ryan somehow makes it sound cool.

TL;DR:

It should be pointed that Ryan Gosling is an accomplished, well-ranged actor that can play many comedic and dramatic roles with likability. Simu LIU tries too hard to use his “Shang-Chi is Asian and nothing else” card and makes it all about himself even when acting like he can joke about it.

I think Ryan makes it work because he’s essentially being positive to other guys and such. Kinda a “you can do it, man! Get out there!” whereas Simu is just trying to do it for himself.

What the fuck is this soundtrack

Seriously, what the actual fuck is this soundtrack
Nicki Minaj? Charli XCX? Lizzo?
I'm not surprised, but I am more than a little turned off. Not even gonna bother trying to fit the brand, I guess? Just shove a bunch of thot shit in there and call it empowerment. No Aqua is equally-disappointing, but supposedly there's a cover and the creator apparently didn't like the song so I don't care much either way.
Bizarre choices considering literally everything about Barbie pretty much being the opposite of most of these singers' images, but it's not like the movie's going to bother actually being a Barbie movie anyways.

EDIT: image should be unbroken now

Wow they put Fifty Fifty in. The group that had the viral TikTok meme song.

Everyone knows Jem is way cooler though. She's a Rock Star, and secretly shes also the CEO of Starlight music, so she doesn't have to casting couch herself.

Although I found it hilarious she sung a song about cheating on her boyfriend, with her boyfriend, while using her secret identity.

Yeah, but her live action film didn't work out so well…

I knew it. There’s a reason all the trailers are only showing like the first third of the film.

anybody who wasn't expecting this was overly optimistic in the first place
I'm just wondering how this will affect ticket sales above else
Barbie's marketing is fucking everywhere, but with the rising backlash against this retardation I'm wondering if it'll have a bigger opening day but way less legs than Oppenheimer.

It was kind an obvious when all the trailers seem to only show the first 20 mins of the film.

Yea, that should have really been a hint that this was going to be how it is from the trailers.

Meanwhile, our boy JJ gave a glowing review for Oppenheimer. They actually fixed the sound mixing in this film.
