Barbie - A More Successful Movie than You'd Think

Hmmm on one hand I should've expected that a woman-themed movie in 2023 would be woke af
On the other hand, the trailers seemed earnest, plus would Ryan Gosling do us so dirty?

Didn't particularly piqued my interest but I imagined it would be more like a Legally Blonde kinda movie.
Not particularly genius film making but the people working on it gave an actual shit, and made a funny movie about bimbos being (smart) bimbos.

Yeah the movie was aspirational. It wasn't telling you, that you were a slave to power dynamics of society.

I don’t even blame Ryan for it, he’s probably the most entertaining thing in the movie and probably comes across as the hero unintentionally.

I was dumb enough to see Girlbusters way back when and in spite of his simple characterization I found Chris Hemsworth's character to be the funniest character in it. There's something oddly revealing on women-oriented comedies if the funniest characters are the men.

I have to admit, watching Midnight's Edge go Defcon 3 on this movie is pretty funny to me. I've got no stake in this movie otherwise.

I didn't watch it but I did hear a take on it I found interesting. Apparently a lot of people didn't understand what Hemsworth's character was supposed to be, found him confusing, but he was intentionally written to be a male bimbo - female bimbo stupidity/hunkiness in a male body - as the joke. Which i love as a concept.

why is barbieheimer releasing on the 21st on the US and on the 20th on other places?
that's how it always worked, different regions/countries have different release days. haven't been to a cinema in over a decade, so hardly remember which is which, but europe is thursdays, japan is tuesday, uk might be another day too (probably remember it wrong, but you get the gist).

I always thought the Josie and the Pussycats adaption was surprisingly well done even though it was only loosely based. It was more a send-up of the entire US music industry.

that movie is so fucking underrated it hurts. would love to see the barbie movie go with that, but it's too smart for modern writers. also banger soundtrack.

if you haven't, check out can't hardly wait, which is a great spin on the usual romcom-formula from way back. same writers/directors as josie, and they even snuck in an easter egg into josie that made me lose my shit when I spotted it (and fits the movie fucking perfectly).

certainly better time spend than this crap (trailer is a bit spoilery tho).
also see how many actors you recognize

Everyone loves a himbo

Aqua didn't want to license it because Mattel tried to sue the shit out of them in the 90s over it.
Yes, I read on that and that they tried to counter sue. Nothing came out from it, to no ones surprise. As there are dozens of songs that mentions brands all the time, which wouldn't exist. If they actually risked being sued for it.

I will never understand attempting to inject feminist ranting about muh patriarchy into a franchise whose main customer base are girly women who like playing with doll houses and shit. It's like making a G.I. Joe film where Cobra Commander is a faggoty soiboi who goes on a screed about how boys should "embrace" being sensitive pansies. What happened to establishing a market niche? That's like Business 101.

The first promo images released were of the two leads rollerblading in very vivid 80s/90s clothing:

And then the trailers made it look like a silly 90s comedy, which got all the millenials chugging memberberries. They didn't release shit about the story being a bait-and-switch feminist thing in any of the marketing. Hell, even I'd like to see a dorky innocent movie about Barbie ditzing around in the real world.

It could have been retarded in a charming way, and the spectacle of the autistic psycho from Driver acting like the worst of L.A. himbos could have been entertaining.

ngl, playing it straight, and then cobra commander being some pansy-ass portland beta-male ranting about the patriarchy, only to then get blown the fuck up after it turns out it's some shitty clone would be hilarious. especially if the real commander would not give a fuck and drop absolute redpills along the way.

Now that I think of it, many of the girl IPs I know (not that there are many) I could think of were already fucked over by shit adaptations.
I only remember that forgettable Jem movie, the rest were tv shows rebooted into shitty Netflix shows like winx and monster high. I don't think they'll make a Bratz movie will they?🤔
Just wait for the L.O.L. Surprise adaptation to normalize pedophilia more than the actual toy line
