Whenever a hairstyle exposes baldness by moving hair elsewhere, it is an attempt to decrease the net baldness, either disguising the thinness of the hair elsewhere, or just combing over in one direction exposes baldness in another. A common example is where sweeping hair backwards shows the widow's peak, but uses the thick front part of the hair to disguise the overall thinness on top.
