Hey, an opportunity to sperg out about the souls games!
I've said this bit before on the farms, but Gwyndolin isn't a trans allegory or whatever. His story essentially is: he's the youngest son of the local Zeus/chief god analog, he had an "affinity for the moon", whatever that means, and for that reason his dad raised him as a woman. He considers his own body deformed and hideous, but in what way is not really clarified. Dude does have snakes for legs, though, which is way more obvious of a deformity than your dad thinking you're a little bitch.
So he hides and tries to lure the player character into furthering his plans by using a magical illusion of his big titty sister Gwynevere. IIRC Miyazaki's official explanation for why she's a giant woman with giant tits is that he thought it was a funny image; no clue whether that's just a front for him putting his personal jack-off fodder into the game and I'm not gonna spend much time thinking about it.
The series says nothing about how he feels about his father raising him as a woman, how he feels about his father outside of that, whether he considers himself a woman, or anything like that. So, one can see why troons would adopt Gwyndolin as a symbol, but begrudgingly. You can change your character's appearance and gender in DS2, DS3, and Elden Ring, but it's entirely a customization option. Gender really doesn't come up at all in any of the games aside that. The only ground I'm willing to give to them is that "Dark Sun Gwyndolin is trans" is a bit more credible than "Samus is trans."
Also up till Dark Souls 3 (I think) the games weren't big-name/AAA titles. Up until DS3, the Souls games were more along the line of sleeper hits, so there's plenty of translation errors and inconsistencies. Elden Ring was the first truly AAA type title From Software released, in terms of scope, polish, and marketing/hype. And that part about translation errors also applies to the other classic JRPGs the troon cites in the rest of his schizo babble; my fellow oldfriends will remember "this guy are sick." I don't know much about Nier or the 90s Final Fantasy games but it's a known thing that Japs love putting Christian angelic/demonic type symbolism in their media because they think it looks foreign and cool.

Good post, its actually kind of interesting how Dark Souls approaches this because there's absolutely no sign that being a raised a woman was consensual on Gwyndolin's part, the opposite rather it seems to have been completely imposed on him by his family. Its actually kind of interesting because this is how a lot of 'Third genders' in non-western contexts (ie, Polynesian Faʻafafine) actually worked, especially before they got influenced by contemporary western gender ideology, ironically. They were ways of classing people who didn't quite measure up to stringent ideals of usually masculinity, so sissy men essentially relegated into a 'like woman' role whether or not they wanted it. Likewise Gwyndolin is classified into a position as something of a half woman because of the associations imposed on him, and its really not a good thing. This is what TERFs often talk about where gender expectations that are used to justify transness, re: 'Occupying a woman's role in society', isn't actually anywhere near as progressive as trans activists pretend, rather its extremely restricting and forces people into boxes that they are told to occupy by more powerful forces and solidifies prescribed gender roles.
All of this ultimately paints Gwyndolin as a sad character, he's the last remaining true god in Anor Londo and conjures up this intricate Potemkin village illusion to mislead the Chosen undead about the actual state of affairs in the world and what they should be doing. He works through a false imitation of his sister and still doggedly holds onto the legacy of his father and the gods despite them personally mistreating him and consigning him to this fate of forcing him into a role without his choice. He can't bear to expose himself because he hates his appearance (is this Dysphoria?) and the player can easily shatter his whole illusion, destroying his plans, exposing the true decrepit state of Anor Londo and likely kicking Gwyndolin's ass personally. Then to top it all off in DS3 he gets overthrown by a pope with no stamina bar and eaten by a horrifying blob monstrosity who puppets his tortured body in a final fight against the Tarnished. I don't really know what the positive takeaway from all that is if Gwyndolin is a serious representation of trans people.

The most I know about something awful is from some lowtax documentary but looking at their site it seems to me they're pearl clutching liberals. Can someone explain why they're like this? They were the first people to fuck with chris chan and from what I know they were very active in trolling people for years so what happened?

It's a long story but the very short version of it is that the admins below Lowtax had a very different vision on what Something Awful was supposed to be. They succeeded because Lowtax was an absentee landlord more concerned about getting fucked up than running the site after the Mangosteen incident.

There was a big shift to the left around the time of the 2008 election. Part of this is that Something Awful has something called "toxxing" where you can make a bet and if you fail that bet you get your account banned. Given that it costs $10 to get unbanned this is a big deal. A lot of conservatives toxxed for a McCain win in 2008, they all got banned. Apparently there were also a ton of Trump supporters on the site in 2016, according to the goons that are still there at least. idk, I'd left SA by the time 2016 rolled around. I think all those Trumpers either got banned or left since then.
The final nail in the coffin of SA's former edginess was when they banned FYAD in early 2020. FYAD or (Fuck You And Die) was the comparatively unmoderated forum full of edgelords. They got banned because a troon in another forum made a post about getting erections is womens bathrooms and FYAD mocked them for it. These callout posts were a pretty big part of FYAD culture. A lot of classic SA drama is only archived because of old FYAD threads. The "RIPline" (a poorly constructed homemade zipline at a childrens camp) for example is only known through FYAD these days because the original thread got nuked. But now that sort of self policing can't really exist on SA.
Something Awful is a pretty textbook case of a troon moderation team takeover. It's yet another community ruled by thin skinned troon mods who will ban anyone who damages their hugbox. And this damage doesn't necessarily have to do with anything relating to trans issues. So everyone who still posts on the site walks on eggshells so as to not break the strict but inconsistently enforced rules that the troon mods made up. In fact SA was ahead of the curve on trans stuff. They actually invented the word "troon" to mean trans goon, being that Something Awful users call themselves goons. My first encounter with trans issues was a thread made by a troon in the late 2000s.
Right now there are two big politics subforums, Debate and Discussion (D&D) who are all hardcore Democratic Party worshippers who want to suck Joe Biden's dick and C-SPAM who are all Democrat hating socialists who think that Bernie was too moderate. They are both hardcore pearl clutchers though. There used to be a subforum called Laissez-Fairre (lf) which was a sort of proto socialist forum that probably did a lot to shift the site to the left. They were still from an era where edgelordism was tolerated but they were ahead of the curve on a lot of culture war internet stuff. The first time someone unironically told me to "check my privilege" was on lf. They got banned because one of the regulars sent death threats to Obama (allegedly, there is debate as to whether or not this happened, Lowtax liked lying about stuff) and a bunch of them moved to an offsite called "The Rhizzone." That site still exists but it seems to have been whittled down to less than half a dozen actual posters at this point. A lot of people who are big on "left twitter" got their start on lf. So a lot of modern online left discourse has it's roots in old Something Awful culture.

I've seen similar tactics that were used against GBS here about A&N... The whole "They are chuds", "this site is about funny, not news", "they invade other threads" (ask them for proof, they never show it)... I just like to shit-post about politics and occasionally have a little insight into something.
The big influx of the left at SA primarily happened during the screen-shot LP of Super Dagan Ronpa (or whatever it is). Back before it was translated the only way to really find out what was going on in the game if you played it was that LP thread on SA and a lot of Tumblr liked the game. So they put the paywall up on games to make em join, (there was a retsuepre video making fun of them reeein' about it too, dunno if that still exists) they did but mostly they all just piggybacked on a handfull of accounts til they got banned.
Thing was, niggas really liked SDR and wanted to read about it, so lots and lots of them did register finally. They brought their politics and sensibilities too, which are pretty much what you expect out of twitter leftist now and started getting the ear of the catlady mods (Ice Queen, Ozma {lol fat})and people adjacent to them who had already dulled the edges of the site in like the 04'-08' time. They were the ones that banned the usage of "faggot" and "nigger" *unless you were funny about it, and that was up to the mods sense of humor.
The early troons were, you know, fucked in the head and all but they were a slightly less likely to freak out over stupid shit, when the Tumblr mentality came in it was pretty quickly after that you see Furries become a "we grew up guys, we don't make fun of furries anymore" and if you did you'd get probation or banned.
Dumb pet theory is that part of the deal for lowtax to avoid doing time over skipping taxes was to let the glowies takeover SA and use it to experiment with early online tactics. You just see a lot of weird organizing across different fields in the name of "being funny". Starts with stuff they were doing in games, to the eventual real life pranks they'd pull for asspats, Helldump and the beginnings of modern doxing, the list goes on. Admittedly, some of it was pretty damn funny, but it's similar tactics that are used by the extremely online to go after others now. Looking back it's kinda interesting to see how they'd rally people.
Shit, I played The War Z / Infestation: Survivor Stories / early Rust (I believe? He might have been killed by then, but it was the same crowd he ran with) with Vilerat/Sean Smith when he was alive, and let's not kid ourselves... guy glew and was unusually good at commanding a squad online. Then there is Brown Moses / Bellingcat in modern times as a perfect example. So I wouldn't be shocked if you told me that it was taken over by the glow niggers.

Toxxing for McCaine was just final nail in the coffin for a lot of posters. One of the admins was hard-core openly pro-Obama and over moderated anyone who wasn't dick riding Obama, and let anyone pro-Obama get away with murder.
So when the Toxxers got banned, hardly any of them bothered coming back. Since as you mention:
The forums were already culture shifting due to cat-ladies taking over the modship reigns. Ozma (fat) and Eggplant Wizard (real name Elanor Jefferson who worked in the classics department of Rutgers University and wrote werewolf and incest fiction for Amazon under the pen name Kali Lowe) lead the charge to protecting fags, queers and Troons, and basically prevented anyone right of Mao from getting onto the mod team.
They also cemented in place the precedent of Mods going after anything or any poster who was popular and they didn't particularly like.
Previously SA had a huge diversity in members so you had threads about people doing long haul trucking, or had served in the French Foreign Legion, or liked to put on rubber tails and be mermaids.
This is where the Troons got their toehold with a "I'm a Tranny" threads. Mods protected the posters by banning people low-effort trolling the man in the dress, and shit only got more restrictive from there.
Goon is a term for Something Awful posters, IIRC because one forum owner being invaded wrote an email to Lowtax complaining about him sending "his goons". This morphed into gay posters calling themselve Fagoons, and the trannies thus became Troons.
FYAD were a bunch of tards, but they had an external moderation-free space to call out the rest of the forums when mods/admins were doing shit, because it couldn't/wouldn't be banned, deleted, or otherwise memory holed.
Lowtax had wanted to ban FYAD for at least a year, and probably longer, because they called him out on his bullshit. And if anything an addict hates, its being called to task for what they are doing to themselves and others. The sobbing troon more or less just gave Lowtax an excuse.
The tumblr influx just sped up what was already happening. That was the cancer of terminally online, thin-skinned and low IQ faggots metastasized.
