Down the Rabbit Hole / Fredrik Knudsen

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Yet another quoted release date has come and gone with nothing to show for the past 2 years of work. Do his 1,000+ Patreon members not feel scammed?
Looks like they're only donating a dollar or so each and he never made that much when I look back at all time. But yeah, I have to wonder why the people whose payments failed haven't just gone 'fuck it, what's the point now?" and just not bothered re subscribing. Fucker is making less than Moviebob every month. The people rewatching that Wings video must be enough to keep the lights on.

I love watching multiple hour long youtube analyses/video essays, but I have zero intrest about some dumb autists slapfighting over a spreadsheet simulator, I don't understand why of all things this is the one he chose to waste 2 years on.

EVE is not in the cultural spotlight and I don't see what you could say about it that lasts 5 hours without being either extremely repetitive or putting extreme focus on minute details no one cares about it.

Giving us the minute details of something only works if there's a big blowup at the end and afaik EVE hasn't imploded yet.
The title of "Down the Rabbit Hole" kind of implies there's something beneath the surface level of the subject matter that makes it more fascinating. It's why his old videos worked so well. Like you wouldn't expect a video called the Final Fantasy house to be about a bunch of very abusive cultists who believe they used to be video game characters.

What the fuck is interesting about this game? It's not like Dwarf Fortress or Bob's game, or even No Man's Sky. Why should anyone care unless it's a train wreck or an underdog story?

I get the feeling he's making a big sappy documentary fluff piece for this game because he expressed interest and the studio threw a bunch of resources at him. So now he's stuck in it. I'm sure it'll be better than the average youtube video but it's been two years and we've been robbed of more interesting content from him.

At least there's still the chad Atrocity Guide.

Even DSP and Wings are still making more than him. Weird considering how Fredrik covered the two, and yet he makes less than the two every month because he hasn't made anything recent, and his fans expect him to get his ass up and make a new video already.

Yep, this pretty much sums it up. EVE is neither an underdog nor a trainwreck, and all the drama in it is just autists slapfighting, but not even in an insane way like the final fantasy house, in a genuinely boring autistic way with spreadsheets.

What is the hook here? No trashfire, no underdog, no historical context.

Hot take, if he were to dedicate a 6 hour video, multiple hired animators and composers and 2 years of his life to somehting, I wish it would have been Henry Darger.

A 6 hour coverage of "In the Realms of the Unreal" would have been way better, genuinely something you could show in classrooms, and ontop of that there's little to no coverage about the subject online so he'd actually be offering something new to the world.

In general, Eve is on a very bad position info wise. It doesn't have any interesting setting lore (like the Witcher), it doesn't have any notable gameplay features (like Darkest Dungeon) and it doesn't have any community/creator meltdown (like YIIK). If there was some story then people here would have already highlighted it, like in the case of Fallout the Frontier.

Of course some people will listen to it as white noise, but in six hours most would rather listen to a book or 2-3 actually interesting podcasts.

Also whatever happened to the first half that was published in a con? You'd think someone would have filmed it and published it.

6 hours is madness.

There's no way you can structure the vid well enough so it does not feel gay and bloated.
He also does not have any experience in making really long form videos like that and he's not that good at it.

He only has a few vids that are 2 hours long and they feel bloated.

What he saw the 4 hour TRO video on NicadoAvacado and said "Hold my beer."?

Jay Exci's video on doctor who is 5+ hours long and its structured really well enough without feeling bloated to the point where its both re-watchable and . The issue isn't runtime, the issue is having something to talk about.

Jodie's doctor is a raging trashfire with enough problems to cover a 12 hour long video so of course its easy to make a 5 hour long one work, the problem with fredrik's video is that EVE doesn't have that, its not a trashfire, its not an underdog, it doesn't have deep lore, its literally just... mid.

He's trying to make a 6 hour video out of the bickerings of small time accountants.

Sunk cost at it's finest, also, it takes a long time to go from fanboy to alog. So a lot of them are probably thinking "he just needs a bit more" or "oh no! he has a bad case of MUH MENTALS!" and so on. People are a lot more lenient when they like you and I expect a good chunk of the backers are still in that state of mind. I mean, Spoony is still getting money for fucks sake.

Isn't EVE full of autistic power plays of nerds out excel sheeting each other and doing guild infiltrations and stuff like that? I don't see how it could cover a 6 fucking hour documentary and honestly, a Internet Historian style 25 minute video would probably do it more justice, but that's the sort of shit I would have interest going into a video about EVE.

Apparently it's almost here. One guy in the twitter replies called him the Yandere Dev of Content Creators. I wouldn't go that far but this wait time has been ridiculous. I'd say he's more like VG Cats.

The last tweet in particular is a good example of his issues. It's basically:
"I've asked my enablers who enabled me to spend two years on a project no one cares about it, they enabled me to go with it till the end".

The question is what would be result from the release. People will hear every long form video, but even this will probably test their patience. He'll probably get a lot of views but there will be a notable drop off after the first hours. Comment sections might be interesting, but I doubt people will care enough to post any spicy take and instead it will be filled by fans sucking the owl dick.

If this shit is indeed going to be 6 hours, I'd honestly edit it up as good as possible to divide it in 30minute to an hour chunks and release a "chapter" per week to give some time to digest it.
At least Geno Samuel separates his Chris Chan documentary into parts for 20-50 minutes. Meanwhile, Fredrik is causing us to be bored.

5 hours and 47 minutes.

What the actual fuck? Who does he expect to actually watch that.
THAT IS TWO THIRDS OF A LORD OF THE RINGS EXTENDED CUT!

I will laugh my ass off if it gets stuck in monetization hell though.
