You know, I don't think anyone should feel bad for Gonzalo or lift a finger to help him. Everyone told him to leave, yet he refused. Everyone told him to shut his mouth while he was there, but he kept on going.
A foreigner, mouthing off on the current political regime while all of their men are dying, facing an existential threat, from a force far superior to themselves. The only real weapon the Ukraine has in this war is propaganda and public relations.
His separated wife and kids had already departed Ukraine. He has zero compelling reasons to stay beyond the bonus grift.
He could have gone to just about any other nation on this earth with his American and Chilean passports and continued to mouth off about the Ukrainian government and the war with zero risk. No other nation on the face of this earth would put up with Gonzalo doing what he was saying if they faced a similar war time situation.
And his excuse was that he was an old man with many life ending ailments so it didn't really matter that much anyway.
He made his choice. I'll miss the laughs. But he truly getting everything he said he was OK with and deserves.

He said that the reason he stayed in Ukraine is that his release conditions from last year's arrest forbade him from leaving.
On a separate note, the title of this thread should be updated. The description is dated and doesn't reflect well his current circumstances.
