Nintendo Switch (Currently Plagued) - Here we shit post about the new Nintendo console, The Switch

Didn't someone post an expected earnings report earlier in the thread from some Chinese manufacturer that had Nintendo listed for new hardware in 2024? I think a new console or at least a pro revision makes sense, it would also explain why there is no word on Zelda DLC yet and why they have seemingly slowed down with games. What is there even coming out? Mario RPG and that new Mario platformer?

In a more personal take, I just hope they keep up the tradition of backwards compatibility because even though they don't release new systems that often, I always hate having to get a new one. The Wii to Wii U wasn't that bad because all the Wii accessories were still supported, but the Wii U to Switch I hated because everything was brand new and the controllers are stupidly expensive in comparison. I only actually got a Switch because of Xenoblade 2 (and was disappointed by that), then luckily the hardware exploit was released in early 2018 and I didn't have to spend a bunch of money on expensive games. I'm hoping its just a revision so that when the next Xenoblade comes out I can just emulate it instead of shilling out a few hundred bucks for a new console. I just got a Steam Deck and haven't touched my Switch since, I don't want to keep spending hundreds of dollars just for the one or two games on the system that actually interest me

There's those and a new Warioware I think, alongside Pokemon and Mario Kart 8 DLC. I would've mentioned Pikmin 4 too but apparently it came out a week or two ago and I didn't even notice lol. Also the usual truckload of indies and ports.

We've just passed the height of summer so lots of titles that were scheduled for this year already kinda dropped. Everybody 1-2 Switch, TOTK, the aforementioned Pikmin 4- it's definitely been a slow year, though, I'll agree. It's kind of refreshing ngl.

Also worth highlighting the "expected" in that earnings report comment. People've whispered stuff about manufacturers having parts for new systems or listing new systems for a while now as well- I distinctly remember something about a chip set or CPU or something being brought up a lot when the rumors were just starting- so I don't believe that earnings report any more than I do those past comments.

I think Nintendo may believe that have nailed the Switch formfactor enough that it's replacement will be backwards compatible. Nvidia is slated to make it's processor bespoke so it'll have hardware compatibility, and the controls shouldn't be much different.

I would expect them to come out with a console-only version and a handheld-only version along with the original hybrid style.

Unrelated sidenote- Nintendo's Quarterly Earnings Report came out recently.
Here's some links- to the explanatory material and consolidated highlights respectively.

Some highlights:
  • TOTK shipped 18.5mil units... 15.7mil of which were during its launch quarter. Not sure if it has no legs to speak of or if it's just too early to tell. I'm not very experienced with breaking down finances like this, sorry.
  • Apparently, a vast majority of those launch sales also came from people who'd played BOTW. The further away it gets from launch the more the sales seem to skew towards totally new players.
  • OLED sales have nearly doubled from last year, for some reason. The other units remain at about the same level as before, with base model sales increasing and Lite sales dropping.
  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have sold approx. 22.6mil units. I find this interesting for one reason only- didn't 10 million of those sales come from preorders? I distinctly remember a shit load of articles and people complaining about how the games had sold 10 million units in 3 days, and while it's wholly possible that they were exaggerating (frankly I think most of the people who parroted it were), assuming that they weren't would mean that the games took about 9 months to double their initial launch sales.
  • Regardless of previous claims, the above is made doubly more interesting by the fact that Pokemon Sword and Shield have sold about 25.9mil... over the entire course of its entire lifetime.
  • Nintendo states that the release of the Mario movie positively impacted Mario sales. They don't elaborate much further, they just give a number and move on.
  • Digital sales still make up about half of total software sales (approx. 47%), but they were lower this quarter due to TOTK's retail release doing fairly well.
  • This is the strongest Q1 for the Switch since the beginning of COVID in terms of hardware sales.
  • It's worth noting that, due to inflation of the yen, a lot of the increases in profit might be due to price differences instead of genuine surges in interest.

I am not buying another dadgummed gadget. They need to make the new games work on the one I already bought. It still works fine.

Until the successor is officially revealed, I will continue to take any rumor with a grain of salt.

The current Switch is far too successful with a massive attach rate on game softwares (both 1st & 3rd parties) to not enable BC on its successor, and I assume they will keep the same hybrid form factor as well.

However, I do hope that it comes with a performance boost to help some games that did have noticeable issues such as Zelda Age of Calamity and Earth Defense Force 4.1

That leads credence to there being a Zelda Movie, which should be fun to watch to kids and have Nintendo smack down any attempts to turn it into a woke dumpster fire

Is this really attached to sales? The Gamecube flopped hard but the Wii had BC anyways. Both the NES and SNES were massive successes but the SNES had no BC to speak of. I'll be fair and grant that those two were from a generation before BC was really a consideration, but I still think it's worth considering. See also: GBA to DS, 3DS to Switch

By this logic there'll be a Metroid movie coming soon because that series could use a sales boost. Your comment is totally unrelated to the quote.

There is also the matter of the successor sharing hardware parts of its predecessor that enable backwards compatibility, and I merely assume that a Switch successor will be quite similar but with higher specs instead. If Nintendo can make something on par with the Steam Deck in a lower TDP (to fit inside the smaller chassis and not destroy the battery), they pretty much have it in the bag.

A Switch successor which enables me to play EDF2 up to 6, and even future sequels without waiting for a PC port forever, would be pure bliss to me.
Alongside of more weebshit (I trust Nintendo more than Valve to greenlighting) and some Nintendo titles.

Wii supporting Gamecube games is an oddball. They use the same CPU family, so software-wise it's not a problem, but hardware-wise, they had a special DVD drive that centers a tiny Gamecube disc, along with including Gamecube controller ports and memory card slots. That is hardware that adds additional cost to every console that I'm sure less than 5% of the userbase ever used. They did drop all Gamecube support near the end of the Wii's life, though.

You can denote Wiis without Gamecube support by how they have the Wii logo horizontally aligned:

SNES supporting NES games would have been a similar situation. Both have CPUs from the same family, though they'd have to pack in a NES cartridge slot and a Picture Processing Unit, too. But, they didn't do that, oh well.

does it really count as weebshit if you're actually japanese?

I keep thinking this color specifically comes from a fever dream, I've only ever seen black or blue varieties of the sideways orientation
thanks for the jumpscare (and the info in the rest of the post)

People forget what a big deal the lack of BC between Snes and Nes was, it's why companies were pretty neurotic about it for the next few generations. I didn't have a PS3, but wasn't backwards compatibility a massive nest of vipers on that console?

Personally I don't care if the new switch is backwards compatible.

Yes, you'd need an entire flowchart to denote whether or not your PS3 can play PS2 games. It's retarded. But, we're a long long way away from the PS3's launch, so all PS3s that can run PS2 games via hardware-based BC are either now dead, or soon to die and become unrepairable due to bad solder that also nuked all the early Xbox 360s.

All PS3s can play PS1 games though, and that's usually overlooked.

Retarded is an understatement.

Even after studying the chart and pinpointing exactly which model you want, good luck getting GameStop to actually SELL you the older model. I tried that once, and the guy working there was dead set on selling me the newer model instead and looked at me like i was retarded for wanting the older one.

I'm pretty sure originally, the PS3 worked by just shoving the Emotion Engine in and thus achieved hardware compatibility. Then they stripped it out and moved some of the emulation to software, decreasing some of its compatibility, before stripping out PS2 components entirely. Sadly, Sony isn't exactly unique in this, given Nintendo does the same thing with later models and cut costs by removing the hardware backwards compat (or sometimes not even given the later Wii models without official Gamecube compat work once you find a way to load the disk and connect the controller).

Worst-case scenario the Switch is left as-is
A Switch Pro would be fine but the more I think about it the more I want a successor to be delayed a couple years. Switch has some great games coming, I don't want it to die off while it is on a streak.

And Detective Pikachu 2, Metroid Prime 4, WarioWare, plus the Princess Peach game. Those are just the 1st party games which are announced, there's still that rumored Donkey Kong game and probably other stuff.

Metroid Prime 4
Radio silent outside of a total restart since its announcement 6 (6!!) years ago, wouldn't count on it

rumored Donkey Kong game
This has been rumored for years now and I am no closer to believing it'll be a thing now as opposed to when it first came about

Detective Pikachu 2
imagine considering this on the same level as Metroid Prime 4 or even Warioware
if Nintendo wasn't shilling it this'd be shovelware trash
