That is Pat's biggest downfall as a writer is how often he uses "witty banter" as a crutch. It makes catchphrase lines from 80s Schwarzenegger films seem like Shakespeare in comparison, and it's just cover to cover, nearly every spoken line. He thinks this makes his writing incredibly clever. The premise was intriguing enough, even if the dialogue surrounding it was rather stilted and the jokes/quips/puns fell flat way more often than they didn't.
His premises in general aren't actually half bad for generic sci-fi novels popular fiction. Nothing groundbreaking or innovative, but what actually is nowadays? I actually think that's how he got published in the first place was his concepts sound good as 2 minute pitches. The problem is the execution, it comes across as extremely pretentious and nonsubstantive.
