His dad actually died in 1898. It's believed they got the cat in 1899 when Lovecraft was nine. Also he had been committed to a mental institution for years prior to that.
It could have been his grandfather's choice of name, or his mother or her sisters.

Also a lot of people back then didn't realize Nigger was offensive. I know it's weird to us but back then it was just the word many people used for black. My mum when a kid in the 50's got a cat from her neighbors when they moved it was all black and he was already named Sambo and she never realized there was a racial aspect to the name to the point that in the 70's when she got a black kitten she named him Sambo II and my mum wasn't racist just ignorant.

I always thought it was his Dad's cat, I know Lovecraft said he had Niggerman when he was a kid, I know his Dad was committed, but I didn't realize he died when Howard was that young.
That's pretty sad.
It explains a lot about why Lovecraft was so withdrawn and didn't like being around people.
Lovecraft did marry and his wife brought him out of his shell a lot later in life, but he remained a loner and private person, most of his friendships even were carried out through correspondence rather than in person.
His Dad dying in a madhouse explains a lot of the fear of going mad that ran through Lovecrafts work.
I never realized he lost his Dad that young, that's pretty sad.

People are too hard on Lovecraft, yeah he was a sperg with some beliefs we dislike today but he had a really difficult life and that shit didn't come out of nowhere. Making fun of him always feels like punching down to me. If he had lived now he would have had a thread, but it would be like one of the schizocow threads where we all feel mostly sorry for the cow and want him to take his meds.

3 months ago I created a post I labeled the Seabass Chronicles, a story of an 18-year-old troon who wouldn't stop baiting that they were going to unalive themself, I held off posting it for a month because I didn't want the Farms to get the blame for it in the event that they did infact end it.
It's time to give an update: Still alive and still baiting about suicide.

Lovecraft wasn't as totally racist as people would make out (his wife was fucking Jewish) no more so than most people in his day, he was more misanthropic than anything, if anything Lovecraft seemed to dislike all people equally, and I get the impression his attitudes stemmed more from fear than anything. In later years he also mellowed a great deal.
Lovecraft was a shy and quiet man, I get the impression a lot of his attitudes were due to the way he was treated himself.

He'd be one of those cows I'd actually support interacting with. Not harrassing, just keeping him company. He always struck me as an incredibly lonely and fearful person, he needed a good friend.
Eta: talked to my husband about this thread, he's a big fan of him and wanted to state that- despite his rough upbringing, Niggerman was important because that cat was the only reason he left the house when he was younger. It took him his whole life, but when he was older, he was much more social and progressive. His work The Mountains Of Madness were when he was much older. The character seems a lot like him, where it states "I can look at these ubknowable beings, I cannot fathom how they think, but I can see their humanity, as they reflect much of what drives humanity". It struck me as him not just confronting his own fears, but understanding how they worked to move past them.

I am considerably older than Colin and we always had separate changing rooms, even at junior school. All schools in the uk have (sorry, had, pre current madness) separate changing. If you went on a trip anywhere without such facilities the usual routine was the girls changed first, left into the main whatever it was then the boys did.

I mean, he is only 18, making the media hes talking about stuff thats generation-appropriate, so in this case I don't think its creepy. I just feel bad for him it seems like he has been transitioning for at least a bit of time so I hope he can get some real help, I mean I doubt he will, but you can always hope.

Though, you think, he was with his wife for 14 years, had a break up 3 years ago and got back together, but then was just having marriage troubles 5 months ago. So who did he break up with 9 months ago? Obviously not his wife. Seems like he was cheating on her (who he lived with) with some other female whom he would text and call constantly. In the comments he also says this relationship wasn't long, but it was very intense and extremely close.
